Alice Anderson's Motor Service

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Alice Anderson's Motor Service

Alice Anderson was Australia’s first female garage proprietor and employed an all-female staff with the ambition to turn garage work into a suitable career for women. She opened her garage ‘Alice Anderson’s Motor Service’ in 1919 after she purchased a block of land in Kew, Victoria offering petrol sales, vehicle repairs, a driving school, a 24-hour chauffer experience and organised tourist parties on interstate trips. Anderson was a pioneer in the automotive industry with her achievements including but not limited to being the first person to invent a wheelie device to roll under cars, similar to those used in garages today. Her death in 1926 at the young age of 29 remains a mystery and continues to be investigated as to whether it was an accident or suicide that ended her life. The exhibition at the National Motor Museum will recreate Anderson’s garage and explore her life through the challenges and obstacles she faced, most predominantly what it was like to be a woman in the automotive industry during the early 20th Century. It will also celebrate the vast and varied achievements she accumulated whilst also looking into the lives of her ‘garage girls.’

Alice Springs General Cemetery

The Alice Springs General Cemetery is of significance to the Territory and is valued by the community principally as the last resting place of many individuals and families who played an important pioneering role in the development of the Territory's pastoral, mining and transport industries, arts and culture, and the areas of education, law and order. Individuals interred in the Cemetery include noted Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira and Territory architect, Beni Carr Glynn Burnett. Although not officially proclaimed as a Cemetery until 1949, burials occurred between 1933 up until 1995 when the cemetery was closed with exceptions. The relatively open, simple, yet formal Cemetery layout is a reminder that even after the arrival of the railway in 1929 life in the Centre continued to be characterised by harsh and basic conditions.

All Saints Church - Henley Brook

Discover the charm and history of All Saints Church in Henley Brook, which is the oldest church in Western Australia. Taking three years to build by one of the early pioneers of the area, Richard Edwards, the church has been hosting services since 1841. Wander around the quaint church and examine the craftsmanship of the early settlers. Walk through the cemetery and read the inscriptions on the gravestones of significant pioneers who developed the colony, including William Mackie, Frederick Irwin and John Connolly. As stated on a sign at the entrance of the church grounds "it was here the vision of a State arose in his heart and mind." All Saints is a popular attraction for visitors touring the Swan Valley wine region. After exploring the charming church, relax overlooking the banks of the Swan River, which flows behind the church.
