Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum (GeoCentre)

A walk around the centre of Broken Hill will give you an idea of how mining forged the city, with streets that are named after the metals and minerals dug up here over the past 140 years. You can learn more about these mining deposits at the Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum, also known as the GeoCentre. On a three-screen cinema, take a ten minute journey from the Big Bang to the present day and learn how the Line of Lode, the huge deposit of ore that made the city's fortune, was formed. Find a world-class collection of more than 2,000 mineral, gem and crystal specimens, including a 42kg silver nugget. Visitors should look out for the famous silver tree ornament once owned by Charles Rasp, the boundary rider-turned-prospector who discovered the original 'broken hill'. It was Rasp who, along with six others – the Syndicate of Seven – formed the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) in 1885, thus setting in motion the development of the mines, and eventually the city itself.

Albert Namatjira Memorial

The Albert Namatjira Memorial was funded, designed and constructed by friends and supporters of a famous Australian artist. Namatjira, a landscape artist, captured the remarkable scenery of central Australia in a distinctive style that has become internationally renowned as the Hermannsburg School of water colour painting. The associations of the memorial with Albert Namatjira and, importantly, his continued presence as a part of the history of Hermannsburg and central Australia, along with the personalities of Rex Batterbee, Pastor F W Albrecht and others, provide a tangible acknowledgment of the life of a famous Australian. The Memorial is valued by the local Aboriginal community as a symbol of the recognition of this important Aboriginal artist by non-Aboriginal Australians. The memorial consists of a monument about 6m tall, constructed of local red sandstone set on a concrete base. A plaque has been installed on the north side of the monument and reads: This is the landscape that inspired the artist Albert Namatjira 28-7-1902 - 8-8-1959 The memorial was unveiled on 22 July 1962 by the then Minister for Territories, the Honourable Paul Hasluck.

Albert Namatjira’s House

Albert Namatjira’s house was constructed by the great artist himself with the help of other local men in 1944, after the success of an exhibition in Melbourne. Built of local materials, the house reflected the style, materials and techniques used at Hermannsburg Mission over many years. Namatjira and his family lived in the house for only five years before they moved out for cultural reasons following the death of a child, after which relatives cared for the house. Following renovation in 1971 and conservation work in 1986, it was used as a small museum and craft outlet. The house is significant for its associations with the man who gained national and international fame. That fame and its many obligations eventually took its toll on his health and life, however his works remain a vital part of the heritage of the Northern Territory and Australia.
