East Perth Cemeteries at Martellup on Whadjuk Nyoongar Country

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

East Perth Cemeteries at Martellup on Whadjuk Nyoongar Country

East Perth Cemeteries sits in an area known as Martellup, on a sandy hill overlooking Western Australia’s capital city. In 1829 this was the site of the first colonial burial ground in Perth, when a general cemetery was established. This was followed by six more different denominations, plus one for felons, until the closure of the eight cemeteries in 1899. More than 10,000 people who died in colonial Perth are buried here, from the wealthy and prominent to the poor and unknown. A simple Gothic church, designed by colonial architect Richard Roach Jewell, stands in the middle of the Church of England Cemetery. Built in 1871, St Bartholomew’s is the only example of a mortuary chapel constructed in Western Australia. It became a parish church in 1888 and was almost doubled in size after extensions in 1900. St Bartholomew’s remains a consecrated church and significant conservation was recently carried out. It is still used for church services, weddings and other religious events. Since the closure of the Cemeteries, the majority of the grave headstones and markers have been lost through decay, neglect, vandalism and well-intentioned ‘cleanups’. The remaining 800 however, now cared for by the National Trust, offer a unique opportunity to tell and explore stories of bravery, tragedy, illness and accident, of success, suffering and loved ones lost.

Peninsula Farm at Wu-rut Woorat on Whadjuk Nyoongar Country

Peninsula Farm at Wu-rut Woorat is located on the banks of the Swan River off Johnson Road, Maylands and was one of the first farms in the colony and the earliest metropolitan residence. Peninsula Farm offers a unique opportunity to explore the first years of European settlement in Western Australia. Constructed by Joseph Hardey in 1839, it was the third house he built on Peninsula Farm, a property originally granted to him in 1830. Over the years the house was added to, expanded outwards and upwards. At the same time, the farm became smaller and smaller. Peninsula Farm at Wu-rut Woorat remained in the Hardey family until 1913. Joseph Hardey and his son Richard, who took over management of the property in the late 1860s, were highly influential in the religious, business and political activities of the colony. Peninsula Farm, however, tells more than just their stories. It also tells the stories of their wives and daughters, the women and servants who ran the house and the workers who ran the farm. It tells of farming and how families and the young colony sustained themselves.

St Mary's Cathedral

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

St Mary's Cathedral

Perched atop a hill in East Perth, St Mary's Cathedral serves as the spiritual heart of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Perth and the seat of Archbishop Timothy Costelloe. Officially known as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it proudly overlooks Victoria Square, inviting visitors and worshippers alike. The cathedral's construction unfolded in three phases, beginning with the original building completed in 1865. Ambitious plans in the 1920s envisioned a grand Perpendicular Gothic structure, but these were halted by the Great Depression. This left the cathedral partially expanded, featuring a new transept and sanctuary, while retaining the original nave. For more than 70 years, the cathedral remained incomplete and required extensive restoration. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, successful fundraising led to a major expansion featuring a modern curved design, a striking second spire, and an underground parish centre. The cathedral closed for renovations in 2006 and reopened in December 2009, blending historic charm with contemporary architecture. Today, St Mary's Cathedral stands as a welcoming sanctuary in the city, open daily for prayer, reflection, and quiet contemplation. Visitors can experience its rich history, stunning architecture, and peaceful atmosphere in the heart of Perth.
