About this place

What to expect

Nestled on the Swan River between East Perth and Victoria Park, Heirisson Island is a peaceful escape just minutes from the city. It's a place where nature, culture, and history come together in quiet harmony. Known as Matagarup—meaning "leg deep"—by the Nyoongar people, the island holds deep cultural significance and is listed on the Western Australian Department of Aboriginal Affairs' register of Aboriginal sites. A small group of western grey kangaroos has called the island home since the late 1990s. Today, five females live here, often seen grazing at dawn and dusk. Visitors can walk the island's quiet paths, enjoy views of the river and city skyline, and connect with the native flora and fauna. Heirisson Island is a favourite among those seeking a unique experience that blends Aboriginal heritage with Western Australia's natural beauty.
