Broken Hill Conservation Gardens

The Broken Hill Conservation Garden is a practical demonstration space showcasing native plants that thrive in the region's hot, dry climate. Developed by Broken Hill City Council in partnership with Country Energy and the Broken Hill Environmental Lead Centre, the garden highlights drought‑tolerant species such as acacias and eremophilas, along with water‑wise techniques including mulching, drip irrigation, and smart plant selection. Two sculptures add character to the garden. Pro Hart's Big Ant, designed in 1980 and originally installed at the Stephens Creek Hotel, was later donated to the city and relocated to the Conservation Garden in 1990. The sculpture is dedicated to the workers of Broken Hill and their struggles, reflecting the artist's strong connection to the region. Nearby, a sculpture inspired by cerussite, one of Broken Hill's most iconic minerals, celebrates the city's globally significant geology. Cerussite from Broken Hill is recognised internationally for its distinctive crystal forms and mineralogical importance. Visitors can explore two planting zones—native and exotic—to see how different species respond to local conditions, supported by interpretive signage explaining soil characteristics, moisture‑saving methods, and plant resilience. Whether you're a gardener, a visitor interested in arid‑zone ecology, or simply looking for a quiet place to wander, the Conservation Garden offers an informative and accessible look at the landscapes and stories that shape Far West NSW.

Bronte Beach and Baths

Bronte is just over a kilometre's walk south of Bondi. The beach itself faces east and picks up swell from any direction, but bulky headlands to the north and south and clusters of underwater rocks make conditions challenging, especially for swimmers. The south headland shapes Bronte's premium wave, but it breaks across rocks so it's for confident board-riders only. Those same rocks create a sheltered natural pool beloved of parents with young kids, while an ocean-fed lap pool tucked in beneath the south headland provides one of Sydney's finest saltwater swim experiences (free entry). A wide grassy park behind the beach has barbecues and picnic tables and gives way to a wooded gully between rows of expensive houses on the opposing hillsides.

Bronze Pelican

Standing gracefully by the river at Lance Ferris Wharf, the Bronze Pelican sculpture was created in memory of Lance Ferris, founder of Australian Seabird Rescue. Crafted in cast bronze by Frank Miles Fine Art Studio, the piece is both a tribute to Lance's lasting legacy and a celebration of the seabirds that define Ballina's coastal environment. The sculpture captures the elegance and calm of the pelican — a symbol of balance, care, and community — perfectly at home beside the waters that inspired its creation. Frank Miles, born in Zimbabwe in 1946, is an internationally recognised sculptor whose lifelong intimacy with nature is reflected in his work. After earning a degree in Botany and Zoology, Frank developed a passion for wildlife art, mastering the craft of bronze casting to capture the vitality and emotion of the natural world. Today, his pieces are found in private, public, and corporate collections worldwide, each designed to lift the spirit and connect people with the beauty of their surroundings.
