Landmarks and Buildings

Beacon Hill Lookout

The original wooden structure, formally named “One Tree Hill” was used as a navigational aid for fishermen. Local contractor Marc Dawson was tasked with the job of rebuilding the Robe Lookout Tower at Beacon Hill as part of the Robe “150” Celebrations in 1996. The old wooden structure was removed and replaced by a circular paddock stone tower offering panoramic views of Robe. The tower is constructed with a central core of Mount Gambier stone ashlars and a freestone face. A poured in-situ reinforced concrete staircase leads to the top viewing platform. Local, paddock-picked, limestone collected from nearby properties was used for the freestone face. Access to the base of the tower is by a timber boardwalk, approximately 28 metres long, with an overall rise of over three metres. The boardwalk was constructed by 13 of the Robe and District Lions Club members who contributed in excess of 130 hours of voluntary labour. In 2022, the Robe and District Lions Club returned to clean up and re-plant the vegetation surrounding the tower and perform some required maintenance to the tower and boardwalk.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Beagle Bay

Beagle Bay is one of three Aboriginal communities on the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome and an interesting part of Western Australian history. A short 150-kilometre drive along the sealed road to Cape Leveque will deliver sights of the beautiful Beagle Bay Sacred Heart Church with its famous mother-of-pearl shell altar. This is one of the most beautiful churches in Australia. The church was built entirely by hand by local Aboriginal people and the Pallottine monks who started the Catholic mission in the late 1800s. The detailing mother of pearl, cowrie, volute and olive snail shells is gorgeous. The area is home to the Nyul Nyul people who’ve existed in this harsh but pristine coastal environment for thousands of years. The traditional owners have known it as Ngariun Burr which means "surrounded by springs". Beagle Bay has an interesting history. It was named after a boat that was moored at the bay during a brief stay. Once used as a home for Aboriginal children separated from their families, it is now administered by those same children. The monks are still there and are responsible for running the church and school. There is no accommodation available in Beagle Bay but it is a must-stop destination if you visit Broome and the Kimberley. Community Entry fees apply.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Beatrice Hill Well and Stone Fences

The Beatrice Hill Well was sunk in the 1880s when Beatrice Hill was the site of an experimental coffee plantation. It is built of locally found banded ironstone and is of simple yet solid construction. The well shaft is in excellent condition. The sinking of wells took place as early agriculture ventures in the Northern Territory were progressed. Wells were essential to the successful development of land in northern Australia. Extant wells remain an indicator of development and in the NT, they are often the only physical reminders that the land was once occupied. The Beatrice Hill Well is associated with prominent 19th century pastoralists and entrepreneurs, Maurice Lyons and CB Fisher, who were the first to develop land in northern Australia on a grand scale. The stone wall fences at Beatrice Hill were also erected during the 1880s. They are associated with the agricultural ventures that gave rise to the Beatrice Hill property. Stone wall fences are an unusual feature and are a design of exceptional interest in the northern Australian landscape.

Beaudesert Historical Museum

Beaudesert Historical Museum

The Beaudesert Historical Museum is one of the largest country town museums in Queensland, with over 10,000 artefacts covering the Scenic Rim region's industrial and lifestyle heritage. From the humble Mother Potts clothes iron, to the large red Dennis fire engine, there is something for everyone. A favourite photographic opportunity for visitors to Beaudesert Historical Museum is the Milbanks Pioneer Cottage. This cottage originally built in 1875 by Patrick Milbanks on his Kerry property, out of local hand hewn timbers, slats and shingle roof. It is furnished with a four-poster bed, large cedar sideboard and numerous articles that portray the life of the early pioneers. It was donated to the museum by Patrick Milbanks' grandchildren and relocated to its present site in 1979. Dedicated to the Fire Services by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Leslie Wilson, in 1935 it was considered to be the Rolls Royce of fire equipment. The Dennis Fire Engine was used in South Brisbane for twenty years before working for ten years in Beaudesert. It was donated to the museum by the local brigade after surviving a flood in 1965. Their Angels of Agriculture Display is being well received - a tribute to local bee keeper Mr Norm Rice and his pioneering work in relation to the role of bees in the agricultural world and the community in general.
