Then head through the forest to secluded Wonboyn Beach. The views across Disaster Bay and the magnificent outcrop of Bay Cliff only emphasise the reserve’s beauty. There are also plenty of resting spots for little legs on this short walk. Indulge in some fishing in the lake or sea, it’s especially rewarding here. Look for the yellow-tailed black cockatoos in the woodland; they love stripping the paperbark trees for the wood grubs underneath. At dusk, look out for elusive ringtail possums. These nocturnal creatures may just be waking up for the night.

Natural Attractions

Bay of Fires

Bay of Fires is a truly special region north of St. Helens on Tasmania's north-east coast with clean white beaches, blue water and granite rocks splashed with orange lichen. It's not surprising that Lonely Planet named the Bay of Fires as one of the world's hottest travel destinations. Beach activities and bird-watching are popular in this beautiful reserve. You may even see a pod of dolphins as they cruise along parallel to the beach. The area is also known for its snorkelling and diving, with scenic reefs, corals, underwater caves and abundant sea life. The Bay of Fires Conservation Area offers beach-side camping and the elevated sites amongst the trees have amazing views of the coast and sea. There are camping grounds along a 13-kilometre section of road at the southern end of the conservation area, approached via St Helens. The bay was named by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773 in response to the many Aboriginal fires he saw burning on its shore.

The wild Southern Ocean has carved a stunning collection of rock stacks and sheltered bays with clifftop walks, scenic lookouts and small beach coves near Peterborough along the Great Ocean Road. Peterborough is a secret summer destination for many Victorian visitors escaping the busier sections of the Great Ocean Road to the east. Bay of Islands beach on Boat Bay Road is one the best spots along the coastline to easily launch a sea kayak and explore the park. Dogs are welcome on lead at Sandy Cove near Murnanes Bay, but need to kept well away from the area between the high tide marks and edge of the dunes that are home to Hooded Plovers's nests. The park's small beaches are not patrolled. Parks Victoria does not recommend them for swimming. As beaches and coasts are natural environments, you may encounter hazards. Follow the water safety advice to make sure your day out at Bay of Islands Coastal Park is a safe and enjoyable one. Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. Bay of Shoals

Natural Attractions

Bay of Shoals

The Bay of Shoals is circular in shape, with the northern and southern shoreline separated by a small tidal creek. The 9.2 km long northern shore faces southeast and consists of a narrow, low strip of high tide sand, fronted by intertidal sand flats, which are vegetated in places and grade bayward into seagrass meadows, with seagrass debris littering the beach. This beach is generally unsuitable for swimming, owing to the shallow sand flats. Most fishing is done out in the bay, as the shore is too shallow.
