Chauncy Vale Wildlife Sanctuary

Chauncy Vale Wildlife Sanctuary, was established in 1946 and is one of the oldest private conservation areas in Tasmania. It was inspiration and home to Nan Chauncy - A multi award winning author of children's adventure novels. Nan's writing captured a vivid picture of the Tasmanian landscape, it's people and it's living creatures that were "real" life, not the mechanisation and gadgets of modern society. She wrote to share her love of Tasmania- Her island shaped like a heart. Chauncy Vale Wildlife Sanctuary, a 415 hectare reserve linked by a walking track to Flat Rock Reserve (455 ha), is visited by bushwalkers, bird watchers, field naturalist groups, families, groups and school parties. With it's enchanting natural environment, heritage, culture and history, Chauncy Vale has shared a role in creating many meaningful experiences for several generations of Tasmanian schools, families, individuals and community groups. There are a range of walks available which lead to points of interest such as Brown's Cave, Eve's Bath, Guvy's Lagoon and Flat Rock lookout. There are several areas suitable for picnics and gatherings, with toilets, BBQs & picnic facilities, and a meeting room available for booking.

Cheetham Wetlands

National Parks and Reserves

Cheetham Wetlands

Cheetham Wetlands consists of lagoons and saltmarsh of varying salinity levels created through the activities of a Saltworks that used to operate in the area. Deliberate creation of a number of relatively shallow ponds provides an environment which attracts many birds who like to feed on vegetation, insects, larvae and other small animals both in the water and on the pond floor. At different times, Cheetham Wetlands has been home to over two hundred species of birds. Many birds return year after year. These birds breed mainly in the northern hemisphere during June and July and migrate southwards between July and November. The Wetlands are protected, through international agreements, as important habitats for wildlife and are not open to the public. The only way to view the wetlands is from the observation tower. Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website. Be bushfire ready in the great outdoors. Refer to the Bushfire Safety section on the Parks Victoria website for tips on how to stay safe.

Cherry Picking at Roth Family Orchard Mudgee

Sweet, juicy, delicious, premium cherries straight from the tree! This family farm is open during cherry season (December) for visitors to enjoy the orchard and pick delicious cherries. The timing of cherry season will depend on weather conditions which influence fruit ripening. The 2025 season is expected to open around 5 December, with more fruit starting to ripen a week later. For a great fun morning out with family or friends visit the orchard to pick your own cherries, or buy them ready picked from the farm gate. The flavour direct from this Mudgee orchard is amazing. Cherries are very seasonal and their ripening times can vary depending on the weather and the cherry variety. Trees are pruned short to make picking easy and fun for children and adults. Cherries are best picked early morning as they stay fresh longer when picked while still cool - and it's more fun for the pickers too! Bring an esky, bags/boxes and ice to keep your cherries cold on the way home. For safety, good walking shoes are advisable when visiting the farm. Bookings are recommended and maybe essential at peak times on weekends. The orchard opens mornings only, usually Thursday - Tuesday but it depends on cherries. Check dates on the booking system before you come.

The entire area is surrounded by rocky gullies, smaller caves and overhangs to explore. Cheviot Tunnel

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Cheviot Tunnel

The historic Cheviot Tunnel is a key feature of the Tallarook to Mansfield Rail Line which operated between 1883 and 1970 and now the Great Victorian Rail Trail open to walkers, cyclists and horse riding enthusiasts. The Great Victorian Rail Trail meanders through undulating farmland along the majestic gum lined Goulburn River with stunning views into the foothills of the Victorian High Country. Being the only tunnel on this line, and made using handmade bricks using local clay, which remain in excellent condition today it has tremendous heritage values. The Cheviot Tunnel was constructed to pass trains across the Black Range at McLoughlin's Gap roughly half way between Yea and Molesworth. The tunnel was constructed from an estimated 675,000 handmade bricks using local clay. This was sourced from Quinlan's pit in a nearby paddock just west of the Tunnel. Some steel hooks that held lanterns in emergencies still exist near the four indented safety alcoves. These are located at regular intervals along the eastern wall. The Cheviot Tunnel is situated between the towns of Yea and Molesworth on the Great Victorian Rail Trail.
