Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve

Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve

Chambers Pillar is a spectacular solitary column towering 50 metres above the Simpson Desert plain, 160km from Alice Springs. Explore the reserve on foot, and don’t forget your camera. Chambers Pillar was formed from sandstone deposited and worn down over 350 million years. It was an important landmark guiding the region’s earliest pioneers on their way from Adelaide to Alice Springs. John MacDouall Stuart first recorded the pillar in 1860 and named it after James Chambers, one of his South Australian sponsors. The local Aboriginal people believe that the pillar is the Gecko ancestor Itirkawara. Banished for taking a wife from the wrong skin group, he retreated into the desert. When they stopped to rest they turned into prominent rocky formations – Itirkawara into the pillar, and the woman into Castle Rock, 500m to the north-east. Follow one of the marked walking tracks to the viewing platform or past the prominent features of Chambers Pillar. Photographers should time their visit for either sunrise or sunset when the pillar glows as the rays of the sun strike its face. Access is via four-wheel drive tracks. Camping is permitted. Camping fees apply and campsites must be booked online before you arrive.

Channel Island Leprosarium and Reefs

Channel Island was declared a Quarantine Station by the Chief Secretary in August 1884 when all vessels had to be cleared before anchoring at Port Darwin. It was used for a leprosy patient in 1885 and for small-pox patients from 1887. Permanent structures were not erected until September 1914 when Channel Island was one of four 'first-aid' or minor stations for all cases of disease requiring isolation. In 1930 a new Quarantine Station was opened on East Arm and Channel Island was converted to a Leprosarium. The Leprosarium is culturally significant because it provides a unique view of a compulsorily isolated group of people who existed under extreme physical and, in some cases, mental conditions. It demonstrates an official policy of enforced segregation of diseased people. The ruins are evidence of the Quarantine requirements of the period, including segregation, at a time when the rest of the world was modifying its compulsory isolation laws. The Channel Island Reef is significant for its diverse coral.
