Central Australian Aviation Museum

Visit Central Australia's Aviation Museum precinct and meet some of the industry's Heroes, Visionaries and Villains through the informative displays which celebrate the spirit, determination and courage of the people behind the stories. Located on the site of Alice Springs's first aerodrome near where the first flight into Alice Springs landed, it was established by visionary, EJ Connellan and his committed 'troops'. The Connellan Airways hangar is Heritage listed. Get up close to iconic aircraft as well as the Silver Ghost Rolls Royce modified for clearing bush landing strips (yes…that's correct!), fly a simulator, try your hand at Morse Code and hear stories about 'how it was' from past pilots and crews. View the evocative Kookaburra diorama display near where, Heroes, Hitchcock and Anderson took off in the Kookaburra plane to search for Smithy's Southern Cross. Their forced landing in forbidding, remote country ended in disaster. Meet a Villain who 50 years ago hijacked an ANSETT flight to Alice Springs – see how it played out. They haven't forgotten the kids. Teachers/parents can download class packages and/or activity sheets. Or ask for one at the counter. Allow plenty of time as there's lots to see. Entry is by donation. Tour groups - to be paid when group booking is made or please advise your passengers prior to arrival. Thank you.

Central Greenough on Yamatji Country

Located approximately 25 kilometres south of Geraldton and 380 kilometres north of Perth, the Greenough Flats form the flood plain of the river system close to the mouth of the Greenough River. The settlement's buildings and altered landscape provide an example of colonial expansion in the mid-nineteenth century - an expansion that dispossessed the indigenous population of its resource-rich land. Central Greenough was developed as the local administrative centre, housing the churches, schools, stores, government, and law enforcement offices necessary to service the surrounding farms. During the 1860s, Greenough became a thriving agricultural area but the threat of rust on the wheat crops combined with drought, flood and poor prices for agricultural products led to the area's decline. The population of the Greenough Flats dropped dramatically in the first half of the twentieth century and many of its buildings fell into disrepair. The cultural heritage value of Central Greenough is well recognised and the process of conserving and interpreting the historic settlement has been a continuing project of the National Trust since the 1970s.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Central Mount Stuart Historical Reserve

The small Central Mount Stuart Historical Reserve, approximately 212km north of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway, commemorates the discovery of the centre of Australia by explorer John McDouall Stuart in 1860. Overnight camping is permitted and water is available. Stop a while and stretch your legs at the rest area affording panoramic views. Central Mount Stuart is the approximate geographical centre of Australia. Stuart initially named it Central Mount Sturt after his companion explorer Charles Sturt, whose expedition he was part of in 1844. Later it became known as Central Mount Stuart on John McDouall Stuart's return to Adelaide. Take a look at the cairn at the reserve, which was constructed in 1960 to commemorate the centenary of Stuart's expedition. Stuart's success in paving a route through the centre of Australia enabled the construction of the Overland Telegraph. South along the Stuart Highway, Ryan's Well Historical Reserve is another reminder of the region's pioneering history. The well was hand-dug in 1889 to supply water to travellers and stock along the Overland Telegraph Line. On the opposite side of the highway, the Glen Maggie Homestead ruins reveal the way of life of pastoral settlers during the early 20th century.

Landmarks and Buildings

Centred Earth

As you wander along the track of the Dungog Common, a striking, wheel-like structure stands boldly atop the hill, commanding attention. Approaching closer, it evokes the sense of a stargate to another world. This sculpture, crafted from recycled steel and mild steel plate by Sam Anderson, was acquired by Dungog Common Recreation Reserve and Dungog Regional Tourism Inc. in 2023. Sculpture on the Farm is an arts event that fosters connections between sculptors, the Dungog community, and the broader public. Artist Statement: Centred Earth is based around the connection of people to the sun, earth, themselves and each other. The sculpture emanates peace and harmony, spreading joy during these current changing times. Based in Northeast Victoria, Sam Anderson has been sculpting since 2007, exhibiting across NSW and Victoria. His creations range from impressive 8-meter whale sharks that illuminate at night to intricate, delicate seed pods crafted from recycled pipes and antique wagon rims. Sam often incorporates the inherent shapes found in these recycled materials as the foundation of his work. Over the years, his portfolio has grown into a diverse collection of animal and abstract sculptures, now showcased at his sculpture park on his property in Londrigan, near Wangaratta. Sam's accolades include the Lake Lights Illumination Award (2019), Sculpture Bermagui Award (2019), and First Place at Sculptures at Killalea (2012), alongside numerous People’s Choice Awards.
