Yackandandah Cemetery

With the discovery of gold in 1852 and the increase of population in the immediate vicinity of Yackandandah, a town cemetery would have soon been essential. A wander around the Yackandandah Cemetery evokes memories of a bygone era of hardship and gold mining. The first burial recorded was of 14 month old Ellen Anderson on 7 September 1859. The oldest remaining headstone belongs to James Stewart, a miner, buried 30 March 1860, aged 28. There is a Chinese Section with 26 known burials between 1860 and 1903, again a reminder of the thousands of Chinese miners that lived and worked on the gold diggings.

Yackandandah Gold Panning

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Yackandandah Gold Panning

Yackandandah is rich in gold mining history and owes its creation to the discovery of gold in 1852. Alluvial gold was the main source of gold found and tent cities were a feature of the landscape as miners tried their luck in the creeks surrounding Yackandandah. Many people still come to Yackandandah to try their luck and pan for gold. A popular spot is known as The Junction where Yackandandah Creek and Nine Mile Creek join. If you are thinking about coming to Yackandandah to prospect, please take note of the following information. All persons who wish to prospect in any form within Victoria must be in possession of a Miners Right. Under 18 year olds do not need a miners right as long as they are in the direct company and supervision of an adult who holds a current miners right. Miners rights are valid for 10 years from the date of purchase. Miners Rights can be purchased from the Beechworth and Yackandandah Visitor Information Centres. Prospecting is permitted in the Yackandandah and Stanley State Forest. Panning is only permitted above The Junction in Nine Mile Creek.

Mindful Tunnel by Drez

Embark on a sensory adventure along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail between the historic townships of Beechworth and Yackandandah. Nestled within this breathtaking landscape lies the Mindful Tunnel, a transformative mural installation by acclaimed Melbourne-based artist Drez. Known for his ability to transform architectural space through the lens of urban abstraction, Drez uses colour and geometric gradients to manipulate how people perceive their surroundings. This vibrant underpass installation turns a functional transit point into an immersive art experience. Adjacent to the tunnel are more creative installations. Take a seat at The Pavillion, a striking architectural shelter by Yackandandah-based Agency of Sculpture, and marvel at a towering, iridescent native flower sculpture by Melbourne's Skunk Control. Drawing on his background in graffiti and fine art, Drez has applied a calculated chromatic oscillation to the tunnel walls, creating a rhythmic pulse of colour that evolves with your movement. It is a moment of pure mindfulness, designed to pull you into the present through the power of light and shifting perspective. Mindful Tunnel is a part of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail Enhancements Project, a project introducing a series of must-see moments designed to make the trail more engaging, accessible and shareable than ever before. The public art installations are part of a curated journey featuring world-class installations that celebrate local stories interpreted by Victorian artists.

Chinese Burning Towers

The 1850's gold rush saw many Chinese nationals converge on Beechworth seeking their fortune. As the population grew so too did the need for specialised services to cater for their cultural needs. A section of the Beechworth Cemetery was allocated for burial with the burning towers built in 1857. Mourners used the towers to burn offerings of paper prayers, pork and gifts for the afterlife. Located in the original Beechworth Cemetery, the towers are located inside the main gates at the northern section of the cemetery.
