Chiltern Lockup c1874

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Old Chiltern Police Lockup

The old Chiltern Lockup was built in 1874. It replaced old iron and wooden huts in which several citizens had either been roasted by the fierce sun or starved to death with cold. Come in, take a look around and listen to some of the stories this old gaol will tell you. The two cells show how rough being locked up in the 1800s really was. Read the interpretive panels about how the lockup was used and the stories of former residents. Listen to the audio for more detail and watch out when you are greeted when you first enter. You can borrow the key from the Visitor Information Centre, open daily from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, or the neighbouring Post Office open Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

Dow's Pharmacy

Step back into one of the few historically authentic shops in Australia with a visit to a country pharmacy. A pharmacy for over 160 years, this fascinating commercial premises was established in the mid-nineteenth century. The current building was constructed in 1868, but a pharmacy had been in operation on the site since 1859. David J. McEwen, father of the Australian prime minister, John McEwen, ran the pharmacy from 1891 – 1907, after which Hilda Dow took over. Hilda Dow (nee. Grey) was the pharmacist during most of the 20th century. After she married her husband John Dow in 1932, he became her apprentice and received his pharmacy degree in 1936. The pharmacy ran from 1929 until 1969. Having closed the doors, everything inside remained intact. Portals Into Rutherglen

Arts Rutherglen is transforming the doors and windows of Rutherglen's historic Main Street, using vibrant street art to celebrate the stories behind the town's oldest businesses. The idea grew from a simple belief: visual art can enrich the character of our town, and the history hidden behind these old shopfronts deserves to be rediscovered. From that vision, Portals into Rutherglen was created. Each artwork acts as a portal into the past, revealing the rich, varied and sometimes surprising history of the buildings that shaped Rutherglen's commercial heart. While the project looks back in time, Arts Rutherglen is also embracing the future. Visitors can use QR codes placed alongside the artworks to explore deeper stories, images, and historical insights right from their mobile phones. Portals into Rutherglen invites locals and visitors alike to wander, look closer and reconnect with the heritage woven into Main Street. There are currently six portals you can visit: Portal 1: Aitken and Fullerton Grocers Portal 2: Red Boot Shop Portal 3: Mothers Little Helpers Portal 4: Kit and Kaboodle Portal 5: Symbols of Practice Portal 6: A Splash of Summer and Bill's Bench

Arts Rutherglen Sculpture and Portal Trail

Arts Rutherglen Sculpture Trail – A Journey Through Creativity Whether you choose to walk, cycle, or drive, you'll discover a collection of remarkable sculptures dotted throughout Rutherglen, Wahgunyah, and Gooramadda. The trail began in 2008, when the local community group Arts Rutherglen set out to bring more art and culture to the region. Their annual Sculpture Exhibition, held each October and November, inspired local businesses and community members to purchase or commission works from participating artists. Over time, these pieces formed the foundation of what is now the Arts Rutherglen Sculpture Trail. Today, the trail continues to grow, with new sculptures added to celebrate creativity and enrich the region's cultural landscape. Rutherglen has truly become a vibrant destination for the arts.

Rutherglen Wine Bottle

Standing tall since 1900, Rutherglen's historic water tower, now affectionately known as "The Wine Bottle" is a beloved local landmark with a fascinating story. Originally built to hold 72,000 gallons of water for the town, it became a backup supply after the construction of a new reservoir in 1945. In 1969 the tower took on its iconic wine bottle shape when a mesh top section was added - funded by the Rutherglen Wine Festival (now Roam Rutherglen). From a distance, the silhouette resembles a giant wine bottle, celebrating the region's rich winemaking heritage. Today, The Wine Bottle is more than just a piece of history - it's a perfect picnic or rest stop for walkers and cyclists exploring the area. From here, you can take in panoramic views of Mount Buffalo and the Chiltern Ironbark Forest, making it a peaceful and picturesque place to unwind. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a quiet spot to relax, The Wine Bottle is a must-see on your Rutherglen itinerary.

NSW Murray River Bridge System, Historic Crossing Place and Punt Hotel

The Historic Crossing Place is situated downstream from the Leahy Bridge, the first in a series of bridges crossing the Murray in Howlong from New South Wales to Victoria. To the right of Rutherglen Road on the Victorian side, the Historic Crossing Place is a pleasant roadside stopping place. This stop is significant because, on the night of 17 October 1836, Major Mitchell and his party camped here prior to crossing the river on his return to Sydney from his historic exploration of Western Victoria. In 1838, Mr Joseph Hawdon crossed here while establishing the first overland mail service between Port Phillip and Sydney. Later in 1838, Charles Sturt set out to prove the Hume River and the Murray River were the same river. North of the Murray is rich in many historically significant sites such as these, that link our region to the development of modern Australia.
