Chiltern VIC

The old Chiltern Lockup was built in 1874. It replaced old iron and wooden huts in which several citizens had either been roasted by the fierce sun or starved to death with cold. Come in, take a look around and listen to some of the stories this old gaol will tell you. The two cells show how rough.

About this place

What to expect

The old Chiltern Lockup was built in 1874. It replaced old iron and wooden huts in which several citizens had either been roasted by the fierce sun or starved to death with cold. Come in, take a look around and listen to some of the stories this old gaol will tell you. The two cells show how rough being locked up in the 1800s really was. Read the interpretive panels about how the lockup was used and the stories of former residents. Listen to the audio for more detail and watch out when you are greeted when you first enter. You can borrow the key from the Visitor Information Centre, open daily from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, or the neighbouring Post Office open Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
