Katarapko and Rodeo Trails

Experience Murray River National Park on these great walking and/or bike trails. See the majestic Murray River, Eckerts Creek (Rodeo trail) and if you have the time you can go to Lock 4 (Katarapko trail). The trails pass by ancient river red gums, through black box woodlands, along teatree-lined dry creek beds and traverse saltbush plains. Listen or look out for over 50 species of native birds that frequent this area and you may be lucky to spot one of the many resident lace monitors (goannas) that will scamper away or climb up the trunk of a tree as you approach. All trails follow the same path initially. Suitable for all age groups and levels of experience. Just choose the track that suits you. As the tracks are two way, you can turn around at any time. Please be mindful of walkers, and other less experinced trail users where these bike trails merge. These trails start at the old “Rodeo Grounds”, located on the left just past the Lock 4 entrance (from Berri) to the Park. There is plenty of room for parking.

Lock 4

In the 1920's a series of Locks and weirs were installed along the River Murray. These structures were built to divert water to the emerging agriculture industry and also to improve navigation of Paddle Steamers and boats along the river, which enabled delivery of goods to townships and properties along the river system. There are six locks in the Riverland. In the Berri region, Lock 4 on Nitschke Road is just a few minutes out of Berri heading towards Loxton. The lock has free BBQ's and picnic area for public use and if you are lucky you may see a boat going through the lock chamber. Internment Camp Loveday

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Loveday

Loveday was known for its internment camp during World War 2. The camp was established in 1941 (and was one of the largest in Australia) with an impressive collection of recorded interviews, live footage, photos and artifacts a display inside the Barmera Visitor Information Centre. By late 1943 all of the internees had been transferred to camp 14 and the other camps were closed down. Most of the buildings were dismantled and auctioned off. Looking out across the area now, there is virtually no sign that this little known chapter of SA History ever occurred.

Loxton Irrigation Area momument

This monument marks the official opening of the Loxton Irrigation Area by then Premier of South Australia Thomas Playford on September 21, 1949. The development of the several thousand acre irrigation area was the idea of the Taplan RSL sub-branch in 1940, which saw the need to plan for the repatriation of ex-servicemen after the war. In the early years of the irrigation area there was no domestic water, so settlers had to get their water from irrigation channels or cart it from water points. Young trees had to be hand watered with water being carted in a small tank on a horse-drawn trolley. The remnants of one irrigation channel is still visible to the left of the monument, while the view overlooks citrus and apple orchards and vineyards.
