Utes in the Paddock

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Utes in the Paddock

Condobolin’s Utes in the Paddock is a unique and quirky Australian exhibition that is gaining increased national attention. The story goes... While travelling Route 66 on a trip across the United States, Graham Pickles and his wife Jana were drawn to an unusually popular attraction named “Cadillac Ranch”, located in west Texas near Amarillo. Intrigued by the ranch’s popularity, the “Utes in the Paddock” concept grew from a whimsical ‘what if’ seed... and in August 2007 the Utes team began working on the project. Utes were donated by residents from the area who caught the ‘utes bug’ after learning that many of Australia’s most gifted outback artists were donating their time and talent to create this unique tribute to life in the bush. Thousands of visitors have already travelled to Condobolin in the Lachlan Shire drawn by the quirky outdoor gallery to discover and share in the celebration of outback life. The gallery drives tourists into central west NSW from right across Australia and from overseas to experience firsthand the celebration of outback life. A Unique and quirky display of art on the iconic Holden Ute. There are currently nearly 20 Utes on display painted by some of the best outback artists. They are always adding to the display so it has something new.

Condobolin Chinese Burial Ground

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Condobolin Chinese Burial Ground

Tucked away in Condobolin's Cemetery lies a quiet testament to the town's once-thriving Chinese community. The earliest recorded Chinese burial here dates back to 1883, though the first known Chinese burial in the area occurred in 1877 at Sacred Park. For decades, the community played a crucial role in the town's development. The last burial, that of Ah Gong (Ng Sha Gong), a market gardener murdered in 1945, marked the end of Condobolin's Chinese presence. Within two years, the entire community had left. Today, the Chinese Burial Ground offers a rare glimpse into the lives of early settlers whose stories are too often forgotten. Walk through this historic site and discover the legacy of those who shaped the town in ways still felt today. Come explore, reflect, and honor the history that remains in the quiet gravestones of Condobolin's Chinese Burial Ground.

Kings Grave - Goobothery Monument

Goobothery Monument or Kings Grave is between Condobolin and Euabalong on the Lachlan Valley Way. Surveyor-General John Oxley documented Kings Grave on 29 July 1817 on his return journey when exploring the Lachlan River. This site is the sacred burial site of an Aboriginal chief who drowned while crossing the river in a flood. On 21 July 1913 (96 years later), Edmund Milne and a party of men located one of the carved trees still intact and the lower portion of the other. The two carved trees were removed and relocated to the Australian Museum in Sydney, and a stone cairn and replica posts were erected to commemorate the Oxley expedition and the discovery of the sacred site. Today, the site is over 194 years old.

Bolo Farm Chapel

Landmarks and Buildings

Bolo Farm Chapel

The Farm Chapel "Christ The King" is located on the "Bolo" property, bordering the Lachlan River. The idea for the chapel was inspired by owner Walter Bachmann's memories of a similar chapel on his family farm in Switzerland, along with the vision of Swiss National Saint Bruder Klaus. The chapel features a circular design, symbolising eternity, with a domed roof and a striking fresco on the ceiling. The upper floor houses the chapel, while the ground floor contains a residence. Surrounding the chapel are three mosaics, crafted from thousands of finely cut stones, depicting scenes of Christ, St. Joseph, and St. Nicholas von Flüe. Mass Service - the first Saturday of each month commencing at 10:00am, and the 13th of each month commencing at 11:00am.
