Dr Mays Island

At the mouth of the Elliott River lies Dr May's Island . Once part of the mainland, it was the site of the May's house and farm. One part of the property was an old bus which was used for casual accommodation for their visitors. In the 1950s, cyclonic seas and stormy weather eventually saw the island becomes permanently separated from the mainland. At low tide remnants of the farm and bus can be spotted under the sand The sand island is used by migratory birds for nesting and roosting and an enforced closure period runs between September 1 and April 30 and covers areas of the beach island. On the south side of Dr Mays Island is where you will find Elliot Head’s Rock Pool

Bargara Headlands Yarning Circle

The land along this coastline is the traditional Country of the Taribelang Bunda people. Inspired by conversations with local descendants, developer Bill Moorhead shared a vision of creating a Yarning Circle at Bargara Headlands Estate, a place where stories, culture and community could come together beside the sea. Drawing on the rugged beauty of the basalt coastline, enormous local rocks, some weighing more than ten tonnes, were carefully placed to form the circle. With guidance from Elders, the design was refined to reflect both the landscape and its cultural significance. The result is a space that feels timeless; a natural part of the coastline where people can gather, reflect and connect.

Milpi Magic Mosaics - The Welcome Wall

Perched above Bargara's stunning coastline, the Welcome Wall might just be the most impressive amenities block you'll ever see. Covered in vibrant mosaics, it celebrates the people, culture, stories and natural beauty that make the Bundaberg Region so special. Inspired by the region's landscapes and communities, local artist and project facilitator Paul Perry joined forces with more than 200 contributors from across the Bundaberg Region, Australia and overseas. Together, they spent an incredible 6,200 hours placing more than 100,000 tiles to bring this colourful artwork to life. The Welcome Wall tells stories of connection, community and culture through a collection of mosaic panels linked by a flowing ribbon design. Woven through scenes of coastal sunrises, country landscapes and local experiences are stories that honour the First Nations people who have cared for this region for millennia. Designed by Jeremy Kiraly from an original concept and featuring artwork by Nicole Wone, Stacie Saltner and Dylan Sarra, the project also involved local schools, community groups, Gidarjil Development Corporation, the South Sea Islander community and an army of dedicated volunteers. It's proof that even a toilet block can become a work of art when a community gets behind it.
