The Black Stump Blackall

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

The Black Stump - Blackall

The Black Stump is one of Blackall's most significant historical landmarks and is closely linked to the famous Australian expression "beyond the Black Stump". Located on Thistle Street behind the Blackall State School, the memorial stump was erected in 1988 as part of Australia's Bicentenary celebrations. It commemorates an important surveying site used during the mapping of western Queensland in the late 19th century. In 1888, surveyors used a timber stump at this location as a fixed observation point for determining accurate latitude and longitude coordinates. These observations helped establish a more precise basis for Queensland's maps and surveying network. Over time, the vast and remote country west of Blackall became known as being "beyond the Black Stump" – a phrase that remains part of Australian folklore today. Visitors can stop by this historic site to learn about the region's pioneering past and the role Blackall played in the exploration and mapping of Outback Queensland. While you're in town, visit Navena Homestead at Ram Park to view the original survey transit that was once positioned on the Black Stump.

Discover stories of the oldest town in the west at Tambo's Heritage Precinct. The buildings were originally Tambo's Post and Telegraph Offices, and Tambo played a vital role in the early telegraph system linking the north of Australia with the south. These heritage-listed buildings were moved by a bullock team with the aid of logs to make way for the new Post Office in 1904 and today house a mix of displays portraying the history and lifestyle of Tambo. Sit down, relax and listen to locals telling stories of the town's goats, telephone exchange, Qantas's only plane crash and old picture theatre on the interactive DVD display. The smaller building houses the Post and Telegraph artefacts, including an interactive Morse code display, which you can see and hear in operation as it taps a message out, ready to send. While there, you can try your hand at signalling. The Totally Tambo Heritage Group manages the buildings on a volunteer basis and is happy to have a chat and share their knowledge of Tambo's history.
