Candelo

Travelling inland along the valley of the Bega River, the road ambles through rich dairy and beef country before arriving at the historical village of Candelo. The town remains a meeting place and through fare for travellers, musicians and artists. Set on the banks of the Candelo River and with a population of just 300, you'll be surprised by the local fare and busy events calendar. On the first Sunday of each month, the town hosts one of the region's oldest markets and there are regular music festivals, open recordings and performances at the historical town hall and St Peter's Church. The famed Candelo Village Festival occurs every two years and is a celebration of music, arts, crafts and village life. Although bullock teams no longer pass through town and there is little need for blacksmith's shops, a walk along these streets conjures up images of a past way of life. Candelo today still retains many of its nineteenth-century old buildings, offering a warm and open reception to travellers. Candelo is surrounded by beautiful old forests and clear waterways. In South East Forests National Park you can take bushwalks through old-growth forest, go boulder hopping through the network of waterways, picnic by a creek or take exploratory drives along the forest trails.

Cania Gorge National Park preserves a valuable remnant of the Brigalow Belt country. Along with plant communities including brigalow forest, eucalypt woodland, cypress pine woodland, dry rainforest and grassland, you'll discover the sandstone landscapes of cliffs and fern-covered pools, where you might just spot a grazing rock wallaby, sunbathing rainbow skink, a hunting lace monitor, or hear the call of the dollarbirds. The park is home to more than 90 species of bird. Brush-tailed rock wallabies and common bent-wing bats are also seen. First Nations people have lived in Cania Gorge for at least 19,000 years. Freehand art on the sandstone walls is a reminder of their special way of life. Eight bushwalks can lead you on adventures to monolithic overhangs, dry gullies, past cliffs into dark crevices where orchids bloom, to lush fern covered pools and past towering eucalypts and other native fauna. This is an ancient place where water is still eroding and moulding the ever-changing landscape, where rock wallabies, peregrine falcons and wedge-tailed eagles have all called their home for thousands of years. Canoe Bay

Canoe Bay is a walk in Tasman National Park. 2 hours return, 2km one way. Grade 3. Begin by strolling the beautiful white sands of Fortescue Bay before rising over a rocky headland and descending into the sheltered Canoe Bay. Little Penguins burrow between boulders and amongst the tree roots of tall stringybarks. In Canoe Bay you’ll see the remains of a steel-hulled barge, the William Pitt. The barge was used in the 1940s to construct Hobart’s floating pontoon bridge – the predecessor to the Tasman Bridge. In 1955 she was scuttled to become a breakwater behind which small boats could shelter. It’s wonderful snorkelling around the wreck. From Canoe Bay, the track continues for another half hour around the coastline to the delightful Bivouac Bay campsite. Facilities and further activities are available at Fortescue Bay. Please refer to the Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania website (parks.tas.gov.au) for up-to-date information about this walk, alerts, closures, safe walking guidelines, leave no trace principles, and National Park entry fees where applicable.
