Cadmans Cottage

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Cadmans Cottage

Built in 1816, Cadmans Cottage is one of only a handful of Sydney buildings that remain from the first 30 years of the colony. Over the years this sandstone cottage has been a water transport headquarters, a sailors' home and a water police station, among other things. It used to be beside the water, but since the construction of Circular Quay the harbour has 'moved' 100 metres away. From March 2013 the booking and information centre at Cadmans Cottage will not be available.

Cahills Crossing Viewing Platform

On the western bank of the East Alligator River, this viewing area offers a safe and unforgettable way to spot estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles in their natural habitat. 3 elevated platforms and a picnic area are linked by a short rainforest walk, provide excellent vantage points over Cahills Crossing. Here the saltwater crocodile – the world's largest reptile – gather in impressive numbers to feed on mullet and barramundi as the incoming tide sweeps across the causeway into Arnhem Land. This seasonal spectacle occurs late in the dry season, during wurrkeng and kurrung, when floodplains shrink and freshwater flow from the East Alligator River slows. The best time to witness this world-class wildlife experience is July to November, peaking from September until the wet season begins. Before visiting, check tide times online or ask staff at the Bowali Visitor Centre. An entry fee is required to enter Kakadu National Park. Save time on your holiday and purchase your Kakadu park pass online before you leave home.

Cairns Bay

Located between Cape Schanck and Flinders and just west of the Flinders Blowhole, this small bay is hidden from the road. The walk to the beach is approximately one kilometre and steep in parts but well worth the visit if you are fit enough for the trek back to the car. There is huge appeal in discovering a less visited beach like Cairns Bay that you will likely be only sharing with a few others. If you are lucky you may even have this beach to yourself - amazing if you love rambling along isolated beaches. The scenery from the beach is stunning and at low tide, you will be rewarded with rock pools to explore. Follow the path from the small parking bay on Boneo Road, into the Tea Tree Creek Reserve, then descend a steep track from the black basalt cliffs to the beach. These cliffs stand up to 80 metres high and the beach is mostly rocky so shoes are a good option. Swimming is not recommended at this unpatrolled beach due to large waves, strong currents and submerged rocky reefs.

Calcified Forest

Calcified Forest (King Island) - Great Short Walk

Calcified Forest is one of Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks. The 60 Great Short Walks offer the best of Tasmania's day walking opportunities. 30 minute return, 1.3km, Grade 2 (Suitable for most ages. The track has a hardened or compacted surface that has a gentle hill section or sections and occasional steps). King Island is famous for its agriculture, wildlife and maritime history. This walk makes a startling contrast. The Calcified Forest is made up of hundreds of weirdly shaped limestone features. The structures that make up the forest were created when calcium carbonate attached to the deep roots of coastal vegetation and have since been exposed when the surrounding sand has blown away. This easy return walk is about 1.3km long, with the viewing platform over the Calcified Forest at the half-way point. Be sure to take a camera to capture these amazing formations. Please refer to the Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania website (parks.tas.gov.au) for up-to-date information about this walk, alerts, closures, safe walking guidelines, leave no trace principles and National Park entry fees where applicable.

Calder Woodburn Memorial Avenue

In 1942 Calder Woodburn's Hampden bomber aircraft and crew were lost when returning from a night mission over the coast of France. His father, Mr James Louis Fenton (Fen) Woodburn, wanted to develop an avenue in honour of the fallen. Planting by Mr Woodburn began in 1945 in consultation with the Country Roads Board, the local RSL branch and two local shires. Planting continued until 1949. Mr Woodburn consulted with families of deceased servicemen to arrange for trees in their honour to be sited nearest the home of each one. Name plates were commissioned and installed, marking the trees of 110 men. Calder Woodburn Memorial Avenue is Australia's longest Eucalypt Memorial Avenue, spanning almost 20 kilometres and including more than 2400 native trees. It is significant for commemorating all those who served in World War II from Shepparton and surrounding areas and for being planted by one man, Fen Woodburn. The rest area featuring the RSL Monument can be accessed from the northbound carriageway of the Goulburn Valley Highway approximately 20 kilometres south of Shepparton. The monument explains the Calder Woodburn Memorial Avenue and bears the names of all local servicmen who lost their lives in World War II.

Calembeen Park

Natural Attractions

Calembeen Park

Calembeen Park is located just a short walk or drive west of the Creswick town centre. It boasts two beautiful lakes, which are home to plentiful birdlife and colourful waterlilies. It's a lovely spot to relax, walk, cycle, fish, row, picnic, and swim. Chinese miners mined here for shallow alluvial gold during the 1850s and 1860s, and the area developed into a semi-permanent Chinese settlement. By the early 1900s the mine workings had been abandoned, and in 1911 they were deemed as a suitable place to establish a swimming hole. Known by locals over the decades since as 'the pool', tyre magnate Sir Frank Beaurepaire once commented that Calembeen was Victoria's finest inland swimming basin. It hosted many swimming carnivals and attracted hundreds of visitors to the area. The restoration of the historic dive tower in recent years has seen renewed interest in the reserve as a swimming facility. Only one of the lakes in Calembeen Park is suitable for swimming and there are sudden, steep drops in depth. Exercise caution and always supervise children closely. There is a toddlers' pool at the site, which is open during the summer months.
