Bunjil Shelter - Stawell

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Bunjil Shelter - Stawell

Bunjil Shelter is located in the Black Range Scenic Reserve near Stawell and this is the only rockart painting of Bunjil known. It is widely regarded as one of the most significant cultural sites in south eastern Australia. Bunjil does no harm; I think he does well. These words were spoken by John Connolly, of the Jardwadjali people a little north of here, and recorded by A.W. Howitt. In 1884 Connolly added that Bunjil was a man, and was the father of all his people. Bunjil Shelter sits within the Gariwerd, a cultural landscape that supports people both physically and spiritually. Bunjil created our land, our people, the plants and animals, our religion and the laws by which we live. He is the leading figure in our spiritual life, essential in teaching young people the importance of laws and beliefs, Levi Lovett, local custodian, Parks Victoria.

Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre respectfully acknowledges the traditional owners of Melbourne, the Boonwurrung and the Woi wurrung language groups of the greater Kulin nation. The museum is on land where Aboriginal people have lived, laughed, fought, married, dreamed and died for thousands of years. Now, in Bunjilaka, they tell the story of survival against the odds and celebrate their vibrant cultures through performances, storytelling, artwork and more. With the opening of First Peoples in 2013, Bunjilaka presents the Koorie experience with immense power, depth and respect in a major permanent exhibition entirely co-created with Aboriginal people. Bunjilaka's art space, Birrarung Gallery, holds three exhibitions a year of work by contemporary Koorie artists. Birrarung looks out to Milari Garden where they grow plants of significance to the First Peoples of Victoria. Kalaya is their performance space. Judy Watson's major artwork Wurreka adorns the wall outside First Peoples, which leads into a gallery for temporary and touring exhibitions about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. The Stronger Families, Stronger Communities exhibition elevates the voices of nine First Nations men who have taken part in Dardi Munwurro's healing and leadership programs. The exhibition welcomes the broader community into a space of truth-telling, encourages greater understanding of First Peoples' experiences, and supports Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre's commitment to accessibility, equity, and cultural celebration.

Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park

Bunurong Marine National Park (2,046 ha) is located on the Bass Strait coastline between Inverloch and Wonthaggi. This coastline is beautiful, full of striking rock formations, attractive sandy coves, rugged sandstone cliffs, dunes and prominent headlands. The coastal waters protect a remarkable range of habitats including intertidal reefs, subtidal rocky reefs, algal gardens and seagrass beds. The waters here are cool, akin to Victoria's central and western coasts, however they are relatively protected from south-westerly swells due to the location of far away King Island. The marine life of the region is considered special due to the unusual set of environmental conditions. The intertidal sandstone reefs of the area boast the highest recorded diversity of intertidal and subtidal invertebrates in eastern Victoria. The range of seaweed species is also large and includes greens, blue-greens, browns and encrusting, coralline reds. Seagrass meadows and sandy bays are also important habitats within the area. The diversity of habitats supports many marine animals including seastars, featherstars, crabs, snails, Port Jackson Sharks and up to 87 species of fish. If you are lucky you may see Humpback Whales, Southern Right Whales or Sub antarctic Fur Seals.
