Big Bull Mural

Renowned Zest artist Anton Pulvirenti has gifted the West Wyalong community with a striking 3D mural on the Splatter Gallery wall, located at 192 Main Street. Drawing from a brief history of the town, Anton created an artwork that transforms local heritage into a powerful and uplifting visual narrative. The mural, titled Running of the Bull, pays homage to West Wyalong's gold rush era, when the town's main street followed the path of a bullock track due to miners refusing to relocate their claims. Since joining Zest in 2007, Anton has built an impressive portfolio of murals, 3D street paintings, illustrations, and live art, and has conducted workshops across Australia and internationally. His work continues to inspire and engage, making this mural a must-see attraction for visitors and locals alike.

Big Crab

Landmarks and Buildings

Big Crab

The Big Crab is one of Queensland's classic roadside attractions and a much-loved stop for travellers exploring the Bruce Highway. Sitting two metres high on top of the service station in Miriam Vale, the giant red crab has been greeting visitors since 1979, when the owner created it to draw attention to his crab sandwiches. It has been turning heads (and clawing attention) ever since. Australia has a fondness for big things, and the Big Crab has earned its place among them. Travellers often pull in for a photo, a break from the highway and a taste of local seafood. The crab has become a symbol of Miriam Vale and a quirky reminder of the region's connection to fishing and coastal life. Miriam Vale sits south of Gladstone and the highway runs directly through town, making the Big Crab an easy and worthwhile stop. The service station and diner below it offer a simple, friendly place to refuel, stretch your legs and experience one of the country's most recognisable roadside icons. Grab a big crab sticker or a wobbly crab fridge magnet to gift to your loved-ones or add to your travel keep sakes! For visitors who enjoy collecting evidence of vistiing Australia's big things or seeking out memorable photo moments, the Big Crab remains a favourite.

Crocodile Statue

Landmarks and Buildings

Big Croc

If you like ‘big’ town entry statements, you will love the giant crocodile statue in Wyndham. As you drive into the historic port town, you cannot miss the welcoming smile from the side of the road at the town’s entrance. The 20-metre-long and three-metre high concrete statue of a saltwater crocodile provides a novel photo opportunity. Visitors are known to climb the large sculpture for some entertaining photos. The statue was designed using a photograph of a crocodile and computer technology that plotted the crocodile’s shape. It was built with the help of students from Halls Creek Technology of Advanced Further Education (TAFE). Whilst its size has been over-accentuated, it acts as a great deterrent to anyone considering swimming in the crocodile-infested waters surrounding Wyndham. The historic port town of Wyndham was established during the Halls Creek gold rush in 1885. Wyndham is a one-hour drive from Kununurra which is a three-hour flight from Perth.

Big Nellie lookout and picnic area

Big Nellie is one of the main attractions of Coorabakh National Park. It's an imposing rock plug that soars more than 500m above sea level, reminding visitors of an earlier time when the Australian landscape was still being created by volcanoes and earthquakes. The best place to see scenic Big Nellie is right near its base, where a handy platform has been built to give clear views over the rocky hump. Take the opportunity of a great backdrop to do some family photography, or if you're keen on birdwatching, this is a great place to spot some of the local birdlife. Right near the lookout are several tables, making this a good choice as a place to picnic as well. Take advantage of the lookout and then settle down to a leisurely lunch, or consider Starrs Creek picnic area for a shadier alternative in the lush rainforest.

Big Oyster

Landmarks and Buildings

Big Oyster

Once a popular restaurant and souvenir shop, the Big Oyster in Taree is the Barrington Coast's very own 'big thing'. The structure was the brainchild of brothers, Attila and Louis Mokany, whose parents had migrated to Australia from Hungary in the 1950s. Their first venture into ‘Big Things’ had been the Big Merino at Goulburn, followed by the Big Prawn at Ballina and, finally, the Big Oyster which was opened in 1990. It now sits atop a car dealership but is still a great symbol of the flourishing oyster industry located within the town’s Manning River.

Big Pats Creek to Starlings Gap

This 9.6 kilometres (round trip) hike is a grade three hike through the Yarra State Forest and should take around 3.5 hours to complete. It follows old timber tramways constructed originally to service sawmills that extended as far as Starlings Gap. As the walk gently inclines from Big Pats Creek, the forest becomes a wet sclerophyll forest and the trees become much taller. Leeches are common, so bring repellent and wear long pants. The track is mainly over old tram tracks, undulating ground, mild incline sections and some steps. Big Pats Creek has a picnic and campground area. A popular trail for birding, hiking, and running, it is open year-round, inclement weather permitting. Dogs are also welcome on lead.

Big Plane in Moree

Big Plane in Moree

The Big Plane in Moree has a fascinating history dating back to 1975, when the Australian Government converted aircraft A65-67 into a civilian DC-3. On 10 October 1975, it was handed over to the Papua New Guinea Defence Force as part of a foreign aid program, where it was assigned Aircraft No. P2-003 and the call sign "Defence Force 3." The aircraft provided around 5,000 hours of service in Papua New Guinea before being retired in 1992, after a major oil leak developed in the port engine. The pilot safely shut down the engine mid-flight and landed the aircraft in Port Moresby. In 1993, the DC-3 was purchased by tender from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force. It was then flown to Moree and towed to the Amaroo Tavern, where it officially opened as a tourist attraction in April 1994. Please note: The Big Plane is part of the newly renovated Amaroo Tavern and can only be accessed through the tavern. It is open during Amaroo Tavern's operating hours.

Big Potato

Big Potato

Robertson's 'Big Potato' becomes 'Pig Potato' to celebrate 30 years of movie Babe. Robertson's "Big Potato" has swapped its starchy roots for a cinematic twist, transforming into the "Pig Potato" to celebrate 30 years since the beloved film Babe was shot on family farms in the area. Painted by Corrimal artist Samuel Hall, the iconic landmark now features Babe, Ferdinand the duck, and the three singing mice from the Oscar-nominated film — bringing a playful dose of nostalgia and community pride to Robertson. Background - Australia is home to a long list of 'big things', with Robertson's Big Potato only one of approximately 150 sculptures and large structures of this ilk scattered throughout the country. Showcasing the main crop of the area, the giant spud was built in 1977 and measures around 10 metres long and four metres wide. Designed with a hollow interior, you can actually enter the attraction – inside, it has been painted to look like a mashed potato. Image: Big Potato - Credit: Neil Tait

Big Prawn Ballina

Big Prawn

Nine metres high and weighing 35 tonnes, the Big Prawn is one of Australia's most famous Big Things. It's hard to miss as you drive east along River Street, the main road into Ballina. It's also hard to imagine the town without it. However, a prawnless Ballina was almost a reality. Twenty years after its birth in 1989, the giant crustacean was looking a bit long in the pincers, and locals debated fiercely over what should be done about it, there was even talk of demolition. Thankfully, hardware store (which lives next door) came to the rescue, and following a substantial makeover, the new-and-improved Big Prawn was unveiled in 2013. For the first time, it even had a tail. Taking a picture with the prawn is a must-do if you're in Ballina. And if the sight of all that seafood makes you peckish, fear not: there are some great places selling fresh catches on the other side of the road.
