Bethungra Spiral

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Bethungra Rail Spiral

The heritage-listed Bethungra Spiral was built in the 1940s and one of Australia's most significant rail engineering feats of its time. Listed as historically and scientifically rare, the spiral is of great historical significance due to the ambition and scale of the work undertaken, along with the aesthetic and technical values that were achieved. The spiral itself is the only 360-degree rail spiral in Australia and was only the second of its time. Get a bird's eye view of the spiral from the viewing platform and watch as the trains pass over and through the tunnel. Whilst you’re there take note of the beautiful rail-inspired artwork etched into the side panels of the platform. The spiral is easily accessed within a short drive from the village of Bethungra.

The attraction also houses a fine art galley and regular artists in residence. Built in 1886 in the Victorian Tudor style, the Beverley Railway Station was the hub of activity when Beverley was an important stop on the Perth to Albany passenger line. Closed in October 1984, the Railway Station fell into disrepair, but after much hard work by both the community and council was beautifully restored in 2006. In 2007, the Beverley Railway Station was the winner of the Heritage Council of Western Australia award for the Conservation of a place on the State Register of Heritage Places. The Railway Station now displays the Beverley Council Art Collection and you can also buy work by local artists or talk with an artist in residence. Venture beyond the gallery to the Platform Theatre and see the amazing amphitheatre and stage, where many of the summer events are held in Beverley.

Biamanga National Park

Sacred to the local Aboriginal Yuin People for centuries, in May 2006 Biamanga National Park was returned to its traditional custodians as part of a joint management agreement with NSW National Parks. What does this mean? It means that when you visit the park, you're visiting a place where decisions about the land are made by Aboriginal people. You're also visiting Aboriginal Country, where the mountains meet the sea and the landscape connects Aboriginal culture and lore. A visit here is both special and unique. The first thing that strikes you is a sense of remoteness and solitude: though only 20km from the town of Bega, Biamanga National Park is a wild landscape of cascades and granite boulders, ribbon gums and gurgling creeks, not far from the Tasman Sea. Not only does the park feature Biamanga (also known as Mumbulla Mountain) and dramatic river gorges fed by natural springs, it also contains an important area of unmodified coastal foothill habitat. Environmentally speaking, a trip through Biamanga National Park is a step back in time. There are great opportunities for birdwatching in the park, with species like the azure kingfisher often frolicking in the park. Lookouts provide scenic...
