Absaloms Gallery

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Absalom's Gallery

Few people deserve the label ‘larger-than-life’ more than artist Jack Absalom, a South Australian wanderer who learned bush skills from Indigenous people on the Nullarbor Plain as a child, before making Broken Hill his home for the last 70 years of his life. Visit the Jack Absalom Gallery in the heart of the Silver City to find a wide selection of his evocative oil paintings, capturing the space and colour of the outback landscapes he knew so well. One of the five so-called ‘Brushmen of the Bush’, Absalom’s work has been exhibited across Australia and throughout the world. During his lifetime, he was also an outback adventurer, survivalist, author and TV personality, producing books and programs on bushcraft and how to travel safely through the vast desert wilderness that makes up this corner of the country. As such, you’ll also discover prints, books and an excellent collection of opals on display.

Abstracted Outline of the Macleay River Mural

Landmarks and Buildings

Abstracted Outline of the Macleay River Mural

Ash uses contemporary design elements to create a sense of motion and energy. Amongst these elements is the inclusion of important species and ecosystems of the Kempsey Shire forming a narrative to raise awareness of their importance and vulnerability. An abstracted outline of the Macleay River creates a dynamic shape throughout the work; offering negative space and balance yet wrapping the elements together and firmly grounding the piece to the Shire and the communities through which it flows. Included in the mural are: Spider orchid Swamp sclerophyll forest on coastal floodplains Green and golden bell frog Freshwater wetlands on coastal floodplains Lesser creeping Fern White-flowered wax plant" Ash Taylor is an early career muralist from Brisbane. She is captivated and inspired by the natural environment. Her work is vibrant and energetic, mixing abstraction, carefully chosen colour palettes, gestural mark-making and illustration to create a connection between the viewer and nature. By bringing the natural environment to public, urbanized spaces Ash amplifies the beauty and detail of nature and creates a space to consider the importance and issues relating to the conservation and preservation of our natural spaces.

Natural Attractions

Ada Tree Walk

The magnificent Ada Tree is a giant mountain ash estimated to be over 300 years old and one of Victoria's largest trees. Deep in the Yarra State Forest, two hours drive east of Melbourne, and close to Warburton, Powelltown and Noojee, the Ada Tree towers over the surrounding cool temperate rainforest at 76 metres tall and has a circumference of 15 metres. The Ada Tree can be reached by a walking track that starts at the Ada Tree car park and picnic area. The walk winds through cool temperate rainforest with groves of ancient myrtle beech, sassafras and tree ferns to reach a viewing platform overlooking this impressive tree. The 3.6 kilometre loop walk takes about 1.5 hours to complete, returning to the car park. This is a grade 3 walk with some uneven and natural steps, so some bushwalking experience is recommended. The Ada Tree walk features a boardwalk built for wheelchair access. All abilities access to the site is by a gated forest road (Federal Road) which can be reached from the main car park. The access road is 1.8 kilometres and leads to a smaller carpark about 10 metres from the all abilities boardwalk. To access this road, you will need to collect a key from the Powelltown Post Office at 1657 Little Yarra Road, Powelltown.

Adams lookout

Natural Attractions

Adams lookout

Adams lookout may seem to be a pretty ordinary name, so it may not prepare you for the extraordinary view that awaits you at the end of the walkway. Like a well-constructed movie, the relatively flat paved path keeps you in suspense nearly all the way to the two-tiered platform. You're then hit with the most fantastic view in the park of the 300m high limestone cliffs of Bungonia Slot Canyon (only 25m apart), the beautiful Bungonia Creek Gorge and distant views of Ettrema Wilderness way over in Morton National Park. After you've managed to turn away from the spectacular view, have a look around to see if you can spot the pair of nesting peregrine falcons that regularly fly above the gorge near this lookout. Bring a picnic lunch with you and, like the rock-climbers who come to Bungonia to scale its canyon walls, hang around for a while. Finally, join up with the Green track to explore more of the natural environment. Take a virtual tour of Adams lookout captured with Google Street View Trekker.
