Bees on Keswick Island

Natural Attractions

Bees on Keswick Island

Keswick Island has some very special locals—thriving hives of purebred Caucasian bees, buzzing happily in their island paradise. Unlike their mainland cousins, these island bees live the good life: no diseases, no pests, just pure, healthy buzzing. Because of this, they're often used as high-quality breeding stock for mainland colonies. Talk about bee-list celebrities. These golden workers first arrived on the island in 1986 and have been lovingly supported ever since by dedicated apiarists John and Des Covey. Keswick Developments proudly backs the operation, recognising just how important these bees are to the island's natural ecosystem. If you're up for an adventure, you can spot the Bee Hives along the scenic walking trails toward Langton Point and Connie Bay—just remember to admire from a respectful distance! And yes… you can absolutely take home a sweet souvenir. Keswick Island honey is available at the Keswick Island Kiosk and at select local-produce stores throughout the Mackay Region. It's the perfect taste of island life—straight from the hive. You will need your own transport to Keswick Island.

Bell Biblical Garden and Church Murals

A spectacular garden featuring plants from the Bible has been established since 2008 on a vacant block of land beside Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church. The vision was to use as many trees and plants mentioned in the Bible and to incorporate a Way of the Cross in a garden setting. It is also home to an impressive and varied collection of artworks from quirky pieces created from 'Australian' mediums like old timber, steel and barbed wire along to more traditionally styled mosaic creations. Included in the garden is a memorial to the shepherds who worked in the area when it was part of Jimbour Station. Inside the Bell Catholic Church is a series of eleven paintings portraying a pictorial history of salvation as told through the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The original series of paintings on the side walls of the Church were completed for the Church's 95th anniversary.

It played a key role during the Battle of Long Tan in 1966, helping resupply soldiers under intense conditions. After restoration work in Queensland, a fully restored replacement aircraft was returned to Nyngan and mounted for public display. Look across Tasmania's Central Highlands to the south including Lake Cethana, Cradle Mountain and Barn Bluff, Mount Roland to the east and the Dial Range and Valentines Peak to the west, complemented by a beautiful vista to the north across a tapestry of agricultural farmland dissected by the Forth River Valley and Lake Barrington, to an expansive view of much of the northern Tasmanian coastline. The walk is a steep 45 minutes to the summit and only 20 minutes return. Due to the steepness of the track, the descent can be slippery so bushwalking boots or footwear with good traction is recommended. The Bell Mountain Track begins on the C132, about 5-10 minutes drive south of Wilmot.

Bellambi Rock Pool

Bellambi Rock Pool has lovely calm vibes and is popular with families. The 50-metre pool runs parallel to the ocean and has wide, sun-warmed steps to sit on. A little toddler’s pool sits at the southern end, which is actually quite deep for a ‘wading’ pool, so keep an eye on non-swimmer littlies. A wide ramp runs down from the footpath to the pool, no stairs here, though it can sometimes get slippery. At high tide, the waves wash into the pool, so the water can get super choppy.
