Ballina RSL Sub Branch Museum

Step into the Combined Services Museum at the Ballina RSL and explore an extraordinary collection that honours those who have served — from the Boer War through to modern Peacekeeping missions. The Museum's displays feature hundreds of authentic artefacts, including medals, original documents, uniforms, photographs, paintings, models and replicas — alongside a compelling documentary presentation that brings history to life. Each piece tells a story. Together, they reflect courage, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of service. The collection continues to grow as families and individuals donate treasured memorabilia, ensuring that these personal histories are preserved for generations to come. The Museum is not designed to glorify war, but to provide a space for remembrance, reflection, and understanding — helping visitors grasp the experiences of those who lived through the realities of conflict. Group visits and school excursions are warmly welcomed, with guided tours available by prior arrangement through the Sub-Branch. If you would like to donate military memorabilia, please contact the Ballina RSL Club.

Ballina's Coastal Flora

Brightening the laneway that links River Street and Winton Lane, Ballina Coastal Flora is a vibrant mural by local artist Tom Gerrard. Painting murals gives Gerrard the chance to connect with local communities and draw inspiration from the people and places around him. For this piece, he chose a light, uplifting colour palette to bring warmth to the laneway and incorporated tall, coastal-inspired forms that rise above passersby — echoing the flora that shapes Ballina's coastal landscape. Tom Gerrard is a celebrated Australian painter whose work explores suburban life and the natural world. Known for his bold, graphic style and signature black outlines, Gerrard's murals can be found around the globe — from London and Berlin to Quito and Rio de Janeiro. His works have been exhibited internationally and are held in the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria.

Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park

The 3.5km gorge cuts through Napier Range. It's hard to believe that this mountain range was once an ancient coral reef. In wet weather the Lennard River runs through the gorge, while in the dry season it forms pools surrounded by trees and shrubs. It may sound like a good place for a dip.... wrong! Don't go reaching for your bathers, freshwater crocodiles bask in the pools. There are a few walking trails to explore the area. You may see fruit bats and corellas roosting in the trees along the water's edge. Take a while to check out the marine life forms fossilised in the limestone of the gorge walls. They're fascinating! The traditional owners of this area are Bunuba Aboriginal people. Bandiln͟gan (Windjana Gorge) is a highly spiritual place for Bunuba people. The powerful Wandjina creation spirits reside in the area. The park is open in the dry season between May and November. During the wet season the park is closed as roads are inaccessible.

Bang Bang Hotel - Historic Site

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Bang Bang Hotel - Historic Site

Historic Site of a notable 1864 gun battle between bushrangers and the police. On May 20, 1864 Ben Hall, ably assisted by Tom Gordon and Jimmy Dunleavy, attempted to hold up Koorawatha's Bang Bang Hotel (demolished in the 1940s) but found themselves involved in a desperate gun battle with two policemen. Hall and his accomplices were forced to retreat. Ben Hall and Gang visited the Bang Bang hotel and held up all those on the front veranda, instructing them to stay where they were. Unseen by the gang, two constables, Scott and McNamara, were at the stables tending their horses and upon seeing the attempted holdup, drew their pistols. John Gilbert, the notorious bushranger who was part of Hall's gang opened fire and fired three shots at the constables who returned fire, advancing towards the mounted bushrangers as they fired, forcing Mount and Gilbert to retreat. While McNamara kept Mount and Gilbert at bay, Scott took careful aim at Hall as he galloped away – and fired. The bullet struck his hat knocking it from his head. Gilbert and Mount galloped after Hall abandoning the robbery. As you stand at the cairn you can clearly see a range of wooded hills.
