Baldy Top Lookout

The best views in the Quilpie Shire are at Baldy Top lookout, along the Natural Sciences Loop and Warrego Way. Located 7.4 kilometres from Quilpie on the Toompine Road rests a red rocky formation, aptly named Baldy Top Lookout, one of the most elevated points in South West Queensland. Explore caves and crevices, untouched by civilisation whilst traversing this magnificent boulder formation which was created naturally over millions of years. A climb to the summit of Baldy Top is a relatively easy ten minute scramble. Although Baldy Top appears quite small in its surroundings, once atop this hill, one is amazed by the breathtaking panoramic landscapes that stretch as far as your imagination. Baldy Top is a photographer’s delight either at sunrise or sunset. As ancient as time itself, Baldy Top offers visitors stunning sunsets whilst experiencing the serenity and solitude of the Outback. You have not seen the Australian Outback until you have seen it from Baldy Top.

Bales Beach

Natural Attractions

Bales Beach

Bales Beach is one of the few accessible surfing beaches along the south coast of the island. It is located just 1 km off the Seal Bay road and has a small car park providing access to the main beach but no other facilities. It's a neighbour to the popular Kangaroo Island attraction Seal Bay, but you're unlikely to find any sea lions at Bales Beach. Instead, there's just a long stretch of sand that's good for walks. While you're occupying your time at the beach, keep in mind that fishing is one activity that is not permitted. The restriction is due to the site being part of an Aquatic Reserve that is being used to protect the breeding colony of Australian sea lions in the area. The reserve is itself an extension of the conservation park at Seal Bay.

Balingup Heritage Precinct

The Balingup Heritage Precinct includes both the heritage exhibition located at the back of the Packing Shed and the Balingup Avenue of Honour. Take the time to explore the Packing Shed and you’ll find that − at least for history lovers − the best has been saved for last. At the back of the old Pattersons Packing Shed is the Balingup Heritage Exhibition, which offers a fascinating insight into the early life of the town. The attractive exhibition includes both static and themed displays that showcase the working and social life of the town. Explore the room and you’ll find a replica classroom, as well as a replica World War 1 dugout and uniform that brings to life the Wall of Remembrance. The exhibition highlights five of the original homesteads all built prior to 1900. The story is also told of Shire Councillor Lieutenant Colonel Noel Brazier who is affectionately known as the Father of the 10th Light Horse. The oak-lined avenue of honour is a tribute to those who lost their lives in World War One. The names of people who sacrificed themselves are engraved on plaques at the base of the trees.

Ballaarat Engine

Ballaarat Engine

The much-loved Ballaarat locomotive is the oldest Australian-built steam locomotive still extant and the first steam engine to operate in Western Australia. It was built in Ballarat, Victoria and named after the town using the original spelling. The engine was commissioned by the Western Australian Timber Company (WATC) which had been awarded a milling concession by the Colony's governor. The Ballaarat arrived by ship to the Lockeville Jetty in Wonnerup in 1871. It hauled timber 19 kilometres in the Jarrahwood State Forest until the mill closed in 1887. The Ballaarat has a colourful history. Burnt in a shed and left in a paddock, donated to the Council who donated it to the Western Australian Museum around 1924. The Museum received it but found it too big to move and too expensive to restore, so it was sent to the Western Australian Government Rail Yards. In 1929, it featured in the State Centenary Parade before returning to the Midland railyards. The Busselton community lobbied for its return and after three years, it was sent home and installed in Victoria Square in 1937. In 2012, it was disassembled and lovingly put back together taking over 550 volunteer hours, local business support and grants. In 2024, a 3D model of the engine was developed alongside stories and information. Please find more information on the website.

Landmarks and Buildings

Ballandean Pyramid

It’s certainly a surprise to encounter a giant stone pyramid south of Stanthorpe near the village of Ballandean! Built from blocks of local granite, the pyramid stands 17.5 metres in height, 30 metres square at the base and contains 7,500 tonnes of rock. It was built using an excavator and dump truck and took eight months to complete. Why is it there? The land owner had excess granite from excavations on the property and he built it just because he could! We’re certainly glad he did, as it’s an unusual landmark and quite incredible to see sitting against the backdrop of Girraween National Park. The pyramid can be seen through the trees along the highway south of Ballandean. To reach the pyramid for a closer look, turn off the highway (eastward towards the Ballandean Tavern) on Eukey road, then turn immediately right onto Jacobsens Road. Follow Jacobsons Road for 1.7km until you reach the giant pyramid on the right. The pyramid sits on private property, so no approaching the pyramid, however the roadside is close enough to capture a view and a photo of this impressive site.
