Arts Rutherglen Sculpture and Portal Trail

Arts Rutherglen Sculpture Trail – A Journey Through Creativity Whether you choose to walk, cycle, or drive, you'll discover a collection of remarkable sculptures dotted throughout Rutherglen, Wahgunyah, and Gooramadda. The trail began in 2008, when the local community group Arts Rutherglen set out to bring more art and culture to the region. Their annual Sculpture Exhibition, held each October and November, inspired local businesses and community members to purchase or commission works from participating artists. Over time, these pieces formed the foundation of what is now the Arts Rutherglen Sculpture Trail. Today, the trail continues to grow, with new sculptures added to celebrate creativity and enrich the region's cultural landscape. Rutherglen has truly become a vibrant destination for the arts.

Arulte Atwatye Conservation Reserve

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Arulte Atwatye Conservation Reserve

Arulte Atwatye Conservation Reserve is a sacred site to Arrernte and Anmatyerr Aboriginal people. It also stands as a memorial to the Overland Telegraph Line, which was constructed on the site in the late 19th century, and enabled communications between Adelaide and Darwin. The small roadside reserve is located 120km north of Alice Springs. The Reserve is at the intersection of several creation-time stories. The site's name is in the local Arrernte language. Arulte translates as 'the top of the shoulders across the neck', Atwatye is 'gap'. This name is probably inspired by the view of the profile of the 30 metre sandstone ridge that dominates the site. This ridge stands above the surrounding Burt Plain and protects an interesting variety of plant and animal species. Pull off the Stuart Highway and stop at the picnic area, which is shaded by Ironwood and Desert Bloodwood and habitat to the Short-beaked Echidna, and enjoy the views of the Hann Range. The Reserve is on the western side of the Stuart Highway. Access is via an unsealed service track to a nearby telecommunications tower on the Hann Range. The track within the Reserve forms a loop around the facilities area.

Ascalon

Marvel at Ascalon, a commanding public artwork standing proudly on the forecourt of St George's Cathedral within Perth's Cathedral Square precinct. Unveiled in 2011, this striking, billowing white contemporary sculpture was co-created by renowned Western Australian artists Marcus Canning and Christian de Vietri to serve as a fittingly powerful statement for this historic civic space. As an abstract interpretation of the classic legend of St George and the dragon, the sculpture delivers a magnificent visual depiction of the universal triumph of good over evil. The artwork's towering, angled pole and dramatic white billow represent St George's righteous lance, cloak, and steed. Contrastingly, its heavily faceted black base is deeply reminiscent of the defeated body of the dragon. Its unique name is taken directly from the name of St George's lance in medieval romances—itself a derivation of the historic city of Ashkelon in Israel. Positioned centrally at 1 Cathedral Avenue, this iconic open-air landmark is completely free to experience 24/7. At night, it features dramatic illumination, making it a spectacular photo opportunity for architecture enthusiasts, art lovers, and inner-city walking tours. The sculpture is situated just steps away from premium dining options, public transit hubs, and the adjacent historic Perth Town Hall.
