Aradale Lunatic Asylum

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Aradale Lunatic Asylum

Aradale Asylum was an Australian psychiatric hospital, located in Ararat, a rural city in Victoria. Aradale was opened in 1867 and served as an asylum for psychiatric and intellectually handicapped patients until 1993. At its peak it housed almost 1,000 patients. J Ward became an annexe of Aradale in 1887 to house the criminally insane in a more secure facility. Aradale was once known as the Ararat Lunatic Asylum. Aradale and its two sister asylums at Kew and Beechworth were commissioned to accommodate the growing number of 'lunatics' in the colony of Victoria. Construction began in 1860 and was opened for patients in 1865. It was closed as an asylum in 1998. At its height, Aradale had up to 900 patients yearly and is a large complex with up to 70 interesting historic abandoned buildings. Currently, tours are run externally while safety audits are carried out on the buildings. The stories are the same as the internal tour and provide an understanding of life in Aradale. Tours run each Sunday and Wednesday and are 90 to 120 minutes in duration. Group bookings can be arranged, limited to 25 people per group. Visit their website for tour timings and bookings.

There are great picnic and camping spots by the tranquil Trial Bay, and the area is surrounded by rocky foreshores and sandy beaches. Trial Bay Gaol, dating from the 19th century, was built to house prison labourers who were tasked with building a breakwater. Today the gaol is a picturesque ruin and a fascinating place to explore. There are excellent fishing spots around the park's rocky headlands and the park's sheltered beach is a great spot for swimming, snorkelling and paddling. Don't be surprised if you see dolphins frolicking in the calm waters and if you're visiting around July or August, you might see whales on their annual migration.

Arakwal National Park

In 2001, a historic agreement was reached between the NSW State Government and the Byron Bay Arakwal Aboriginal community. Arakwal National Park is the result and has many guises today: it's an important part of Aboriginal heritage; it's a haven for migratory birds and animals; and it's a gift to travellers looking to escape the chaos of the thriving holiday town. Co-managed by NPWS and its traditional owners, Arakwal features 3km of gorgeous beach bordered by sand dunes and rich coastal heath. All of this is just a stone's throw from the towering white icon of Cape Byron Lighthouse, meaning it's closer to the town than it feels. Bring a towel for swimming or surfing. Once you walk out of the carpark and onto the sand, you'll forget all about Byron Bay and focus upon the birds and whale watching in the vast Pacific Ocean, which stretches as far as you can see.
