Arve Forest Drive

The Arve Road follows the valley of the Arve River in Tasmania's South, with its wet eucalypt rainforest. Along the road there are short walks ranging from a brief stroll to a 40-minute return walk. All walks are well signed. The drive is an excellent way to get from Geeveston to the Tahune Airwalk as it gives a great insight into the history of the forest, not to mention plenty of opportunities to stop for a walk, lookout or picnic.

Vin Smith Collection

Vin Smith was a widely respected machinery dealer, woodturning teacher and passionate collector of antique machines and their history. His collection of hand and foot powered woodworking machines were used by craftsmen prior to the advent of electrically powered machines. The collection includes an incredible array of saws, lathes, mitres, drills, planes and chisels; some over 100 years old. The exhibition is free for visitors to the Geeveston Town Hall.

Recipient of an Australia Council New Work Established Grant in 2005. Residencies include two with the Hill End Residency Program, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, NSW. Don't forget to bring a camera and packed lunch to make the most of stunning views down the river as far as kunanyi / Mount Wellington beyond. Tas-Saff

Tas-Saff is the saffron hub south of the equator. Terry, Nicky and Patrick Noonan original sea-changers from Sydney in the late '80s, pioneered the saffron industry in Australia. You will find Tas-Saff perched high on the hill overlooking Glaziers Bay in the idyllic Huon Valley south of Hobart. Saffron is harvested each year during April and May. The lilac crocus flowers must be picked early each day before the sun comprises the integrity of the saffron. At night, they sit like little rockets with the tip poking through the soil, then they shoot up a few centimetres high in the morning when the sun comes out, hence their name, the Flower of the Sun. Spice collected from the fiery red stigma of the lilac crocus flowers has been valued for its culinary and medicinal properties for thousands of years. Tas-Saf offers free saffron gin and saffron tea tastings. The Tas-Saff farm is open 10 am - 5 pm for farm gate visits nearly all year by appointment.

Lavender Goat Farm

Lavender Goat Farm is a small working lavender farm in Petcheys Bay, in Tasmania's Huon Valley, approximately 60 minutes south of Hobart. Spend an unhurried morning or afternoon experiencing life on the farm. Personally hosted and limited to just six guests, each experience offers the opportunity to walk among the lavender, meet the goats and discover how lavender is grown, harvested and traditionally distilled on a small Tasmanian farm. Guests take part in a traditional lavender distillation, helping to gather and load the lavender into a copper alembic before watching as the essential oil and fragrant hydrosol emerge. When the season allows, lavender is cut fresh from the field. While the still works, guests sit down for morning or afternoon tea featuring homemade seasonal baking and local Huon Valley produce, with time to enjoy the farm and its landscape at an unhurried pace. The lavender is grown and hand-weeded without the use of chemicals. Farm experiences are available by advance booking only, with a maximum of six guests. Private experiences are also available.

You will be able to find fine merino wool scarves, cashmere scarves and handmade one of a kind wearables in natural fibres. Ripples Art Farm is located at Petcheys Bay in Southern Tasmania. Founded by artists Ruth and Daren Lindsell, the farm boasts the modern Ripples Art Gallery and studio and a 2km sculpture walk. The Wooden Boat Centre - Tasmania

About 45 minutes south of Hobart, Tasmania, you will find the beautiful village of Cygnet. In this thriving centre for artisans, you will discover a beautiful little studio gallery tucked away on Golden Valley Road - Phoenix Creations. Inside you will find the home of the gorgeous hand-carved wooden Soul Spoon range-not only spoons but salad servers, knives, scoops and spurtles. The first Australians to be awarded the Wille Sundqvist & Bill Coperthwaite Slojd Fellowship in 2025, Michelle and David Rauenbusch would love to welcome you into their studio where you can watch them at work. All pieces are hand carved by David, celebrating the past by breathing new life into recycled vintage and green timbers. Michelle adds to the range with whimsical Bloom Spoons and mosaic and beaded jewellery. Phoenix Creations Studio Gallery opens September-May, Sundays, Noon -5 pm' ish (other times by request- just call to arrange). As well as visiting the gallery, there is now an opportunity to join the fun. The Art of Richard Stanley, Studio and Gallery

The Art of Richard Stanley, Studio and Gallery is located in Cygnet, Southern Tasmania. The Art Gallery resides in one of the first general stores in Cygnet, circa. 1905. A vast open space with high ceilings gives room for large canvases and drawings, artworks and glass jewellery. Meet Richard Stanley, the resident artist and talk about his work. Listen to ambient music as you peruse his original landscape paintings, limited edition prints, open prints and art greeting cards. The gallery is located in a beautiful rural setting with mountain and river views. All work is created by Richard, the resident artist, on the premises. Artworks are based on landscapes in Tasmania with emphasis on the South. Richard makes his own stretched canvases so can make any size to suit the customer's needs. Richard is a prolific producer of commissioned work. ie he can paint favourite personalised photos or can source photos himself of chosen subhects. The Artisan's Hand - Balfour House

Experience the art of hand-made being created right before your eyes at The Artisan's Hand, the working studios of Balfour House. Located in the middle of the historic township of Cygnet, only a 50-minute drive south of Hobart. Cygnet Gallery

The Cygnet Gallery showcases the work of artists from Cygnet, the Huon Valley and southern Tasmania. Found in the centre of Cygnet, around a 45-minute drive south of nipaluna / Hobart, the gallery is a good place to discover the region's creative community. The collection changes regularly and includes paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, mixed media and textile art. With work from a range of local artists on display, there is usually something new to see on each visit. The Cygnet Gallery is managed by the Huon Art Exhibitions Group (HAEG), which supports artists and exhibitions across the Huon Valley. Waratah Lookout

Waratah Lookout is a walk in Hartz Mountains National Park. 5 minutes return, 300 metres. Grade 2. Not wheelchair accessible. Start your visit to Hartz Mountains National Park with this short, easy walk along a gravel track and step down to a viewing platform overlooking the Huon Valley. This walk provides a lovely opportunity to look out over the dense forests you've just driven through to reach the park. Starting near the Waratah Picnic Shelter, take the time to explore the different plants growing along the track as you make your way to the viewing platform. In December and January, the Tasmanian waratah will be in flower and you'll be treated to a blaze of beautiful red. Directly below the lookout you'll see old myrtle forest, and uninterrupted views across the Huon Valley to the Wellington Range. Return by the same route. The track to Arve Falls is easy to follow and provides a wonderful glimpse of sub-alpine vegetation, including a variety of wildflowers, silver banksia and Tasmanian snow gum with their beautiful twisted branches and striking, smooth mottled bark. Following the creek, you will soon reach the waterfall via a staircase and viewing platform. The falls are not tall but have an impressive drop over the edge of the plateau and overlooking the valley beneath.

Hartz Mountains National Park

Hartz Mountains has been shaped by ancient glaciers and offers visitors a window into Tasmania's remote and rugged southwest wilderness. You'll feel on top of the world as you gaze out at the seemingly endless mountain peaks, stretching towards Tasmania's southern coast. While the mountains are certainly the park's heroes, there's plenty more on offer in the Hartz Mountains, which is particularly popular with bushwalkers. The extensive natural and cultural values of the landscape have earned the park an important place in Tasmania's Wilderness World Heritage Area. In Hartz Mountains National Park, waterfalls tumble off the high backbone of dolerite, which was covered by a deep layer of ice during the Ice Age. The resulting features include small glacial lakes that dot the alpine plateau and make this a wonderfully dramatic place to visit. While winter often brings snow and freezing temperatures, in spring the wildflowers bloom and the red flowers of the Tasmanian waratah light up the countryside. Hartz Peak - Great Short Walk

Hartz Peak is one of Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks. The 60 Great Short Walks offer the best of Tasmania's day walking opportunities. 3-5 hours return, 7.4km, 400m climb in elevation. Grade 4. This robust walk, best done in fine weather, takes walkers to the top of the handsome dolerite mountain, Hartz Peak. Views from the peak in clear weather are stunning; taking in much of the south-west wilderness, including Federation Peak and Precipitous Bluff. Beneath the peak is Hartz Lake, a classic cirque lake formed by ice action over the last million years. As the peak is 1254m high, it is subject to severe weather. Walkers should be aware of the forecast and have good all-weather clothing. Lake Esperance - Great Short Walk

Lake Esperance is one of Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks. The 60 Great Short Walks offer the best of Tasmania's day walking opportunities. 1.5-2 hours return, 3.4 km return. Grade 3. The brute movement of ice has created the beautiful Lake Esperance. Nestled beneath the dolerite spine called The Devils Backbone the lake was formed as ice and snow built up on the lee side of the mountains. It is one of the more accessible glacial lakes in Hartz Mountains National Park. Much of the walk is on well constructed boardwalk, although this may be covered in snow in winter. At the lake there's a viewing area with seats. Examples of cushion plants can be seen here in this harsh, often waterlogged environment. Lake Osborne is a walk in Hartz Mountains National Park. 45 minutes return, 2 km. Grade 2. The Lake Osborne walk is a wonderful introduction to the variety of alpine and subalpine vegetation that can be found in Hartz Mountain National Park. Starting at the main car park, a gentle uphill climb through a grove of rainforest containing myrtle, sassafras and pandani, will lead you across the Hartz Plateau. Interpretive signs help with plant identification and describe many of the features in the landscape. Beyond the forest, see if you can spot the Devil's Backbone ridge which forms a spectacular backdrop. A section of woodland and open moorland follows, before you reach the beautiful glacial lake surrounded by ancient King Billy pines. There's a seat at the lakeside, so take as long as you like to relax and enjoy the delightful views before you return by the same route. Hartz Pass

Hartz Pass is a walk in Hartz Mountains National Park. 3.5 hours return, 6 km return. Grade 3. For reasonably fit walkers, the Hartz Pass walk is a wonderful way to explore the alpine environment and glacial landscapes of the Hartz Mountains National Park. Leaving from the main car park, the track is well marked and the lower sections comprise of raised boardwalks. Winding through low alpine vegetation, you’ll soon reach more open vistas, with beautiful views ahead to Hartz Peak and Mount Snowy. Take a moment to look behind you and enjoy the outlook towards the D’Entrecasteaux Channel too. From here, you’ll continue southwards to Ladies Tarn, before climbing steeply towards Hartz Pass. At the track junction, the left-hand path leads to Hartz Peak, while the trail to the right heads towards Hartz Lake – this section of the trail is marked with cairns. The ground around the lake shores can be damp and slippery underfoot, so exercise caution on this section. Find a quiet spot by the lake to rest, enjoy a snack and appreciate the peaceful surroundings before you return by the same route.
