Saigon Art Gallery

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Saigon Art Gallery

Welcome to Saigon Art Gallery, a space that celebrates three generations of Vietnamese artistry, blending tradition with contemporary influences. The journey began with their grandfather, a master in wood carving and printmaking in Vietnam, whose dedication to the arts inspired the family to explore diverse styles and mediums. Today, the family artists work across disciplines such as wood carving, lino printing, oil painting, and lacquer, each reflecting the rich cultural heritage. While their roots are in Vietnam, they have also found inspiration in Tasmania, Australia. The serene landscapes and unique wildlife of Tasmania have profoundly shaped their artistic expression, creating a distinct style that harmonizes the vibrancy of Vietnamese culture with the tranquillity of Tasmania's natural beauty. The gallery showcases this fusion, offering a unique experience that transcends cultural boundaries. At Saigon Art Gallery, their vision is to create a space where art connects people, fosters appreciation for cultural heritage, and inspires future generations. They invite you to visit and explore the harmony of cultures and landscapes that define their work. Your presence and support are integral to their creative journey, and they look forward to sharing their passion for art with you. With gratitude, The Saigon Art Gallery Family

Two of Hobart's electric Trolley Buses and the only double-decker tram to survive from the late 1940s also form part of the museum collection. Amongst the railway collection is the oldest carriage to operate in Tasmania (AB1 - built in the UK in 1869). The first Main Line diesel-electric locomotive (X1) to operate in Australia and the last built English Electric locomotive ZA6. A number of Steam locomotives are also on display. A large model railway is on display in the Road Transport Building and on train running days the Tasmania Fire Museum opens their display to museum visitors.

MONA - Museum of Old and New Art

Looking at art used to be boring. It still is, maybe, but at least at Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art, you can get drunk and/or rage against the machine. Located just up the river from Hobart, Mona's subterranean architecture showcases the highlights (and lowlights) of David Walsh's private collection of art and antiquities, the largest private art collection of art in the southern hemisphere. There's art and exhibitions but also live music, library, food, wine, beer, bars, restaurants, winery and cellar door, accommodation, recording studio, and a tennis court. Mona was designed to be explored—as a space of wonder and experiment—with The O, which you should totally download before you get here. Catch the ferry, too. You could probably speed through the place in three or four hours, but they recommend you hang around—make a day of it. Each June, Mona's Dark Mofo winter festival delves into centuries-old winter solstice rituals and celebrates the dark through art, music, food, film, light and noise.

PHRONTISTERION

Phrontisterion

Phrontisterion is David Walsh's dream library—the library he's been fantastising about since before he built Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art. It houses his large and ever-growing collection of books, rare volumes, maps and manuscripts, and boasts some 50,000 titles in a range of formats, on topics as diverse as ancient brewing methods, the foods of the pharaohs, Antarctic exploration, science fiction, Greek coinage, casinos and charcuterie; alongside African art, statistics, literature, mathematics, betting odds, religion, socialism, sex and—that old chestnut—death. There's also plenty of art, a children's library, and excavations through exquisite sandstone. Instead of the Dewey decimal system, Phrontisterion has the O. Use it to find out about the books and other bibliophilic paraphernalia on display. The O knows where everything is in the library, no matter where things have been put back on the shelves. Let it chart you a course through the collection, linking books—by association, theme or obscure whim—as webpages hyperlink ideas.

Runnymede - National Trust House & Gardens

While Australia’s mainland colonies experienced a severe economic depression in the 1840s, Tasmania remained prosperous owing to unpaid convict labour and industries such as wool production and whaling. Runnymede represents Tasmania’s golden age. This Regency marine villa was built by lawyer Robert Pitcairn and Dorothea Pitcairn c1836-1840 and extended by Tasmania’s first Anglican Bishop, Francis Russell Nixon who resided there between 1850 and 1862. Captain Charles Bayley then acquired the house and named it Runnymede after his favourite whaling ship. The Bayley and Bayly families resided in the house for over a century. Enjoy a guided tour of this gracious house with its elegant furnishings, fascinating maritime collections and verdant gardens. Garden: Original 19th century villa garden including a carriage drive surrounding the house, 1840s stables and coach house, cast iron fountain, historic trees and plantings. Runnymede is located on Bay Road, New Town 7008 (15 minutes by car from Hobart CBD via the Brooker Highway, travelling in the direction of MONA). Nearby attractions: Hobart CBD, Penitentiary Chapel and Criminal Courts and MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). Runnymede is available for private events bookings.

Cascades Female Factory Historic Site

Beneath the shadow of Mount Wellington, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cascades Female Factory is the best place to connect with some of the lesser-known stories of Australia's female convicts. It is located in South Hobart, only a short distance from the Hobart waterfront. The Cascades Female Factory was a self-contained, purpose-built institution intended to reform female convicts, where the inmates did laundry and needlework services, offsetting some of the Colony's penal costs. Thousands of women and children were imprisoned here, and many never left. The Convict Women's Tour is a comprehensive guided tour of the Site. It lasts approximately 45 minutes. The first tour starts at 10 am. The new Notorious Strumpets and Dangerous Girls is an emotional journey through the stories of seven remarkable convict women who faced life's hardships with resilience. Allow approximately 60 minutes. Every day at 11:30am and 1:00pm.

Unshackled - Hobart Penitentiary - Ghost Tours

Unshackled – Hobart Penitentiary is the full site experience in one ticket: Tour the historic site: a guided tour of one of Australia's richest convict sites, wrought by convict labour for convicts, moving through underground tunnels, solitary cells, the prison exercise yard, courtrooms, and the Gallows. Explore the Convict Memorial: a digital history experience allowing visitors to trace the lives of each of the 75,000 convicts transported to Tasmania between 1803 and 1853. The Hobart Penitentiary began in 1821 as the Hobart Prison Barracks, built as accommodation for convicts employed in Government public works. In 1834 the surviving Penitentiary Chapel was completed. 75,000 convicts were transported to Van Diemen's Land between 1803 and 1853. Of these 62,500 were male convicts. After 1821 all male convicts were processed here before being given labour assignments across the island. In 1857 convicts still under sentence were employed in converting two wings of the former Penitentiary Chapel as courtrooms. One wing remained as the prison chapel for the Penitentiary, then known as the Hobart Gaol. The Hobart Town gallows were relocated to the site with thirty-two people executed at the site 1857 – 1946. Some 300 to 400 men had been executed at the gallows on their original site in central Hobart. The Gaol was demolished in 1963 while the courts remained at the site until 1983.
