PHRONTISTERION

Phrontisterion

Phrontisterion is David Walsh's dream library—the library he's been fantastising about since before he built Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art. It houses his large and ever-growing collection of books, rare volumes, maps and manuscripts, and boasts some 50,000 titles in a range of formats, on topics as diverse as ancient brewing methods, the foods of the pharaohs, Antarctic exploration, science fiction, Greek coinage, casinos and charcuterie; alongside African art, statistics, literature, mathematics, betting odds, religion, socialism, sex and—that old chestnut—death. There's also plenty of art, a children's library, and excavations through exquisite sandstone. Instead of the Dewey decimal system, Phrontisterion has the O. Use it to find out about the books and other bibliophilic paraphernalia on display. The O knows where everything is in the library, no matter where things have been put back on the shelves. Let it chart you a course through the collection, linking books—by association, theme or obscure whim—as webpages hyperlink ideas.

MONA - Museum of Old and New Art

Looking at art used to be boring. It still is, maybe, but at least at Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art, you can get drunk and/or rage against the machine. Located just up the river from Hobart, Mona's subterranean architecture showcases the highlights (and lowlights) of David Walsh's private collection of art and antiquities, the largest private art collection of art in the southern hemisphere. There's art and exhibitions but also live music, library, food, wine, beer, bars, restaurants, winery and cellar door, accommodation, recording studio, and a tennis court. Mona was designed to be explored—as a space of wonder and experiment—with The O, which you should totally download before you get here. Catch the ferry, too. You could probably speed through the place in three or four hours, but they recommend you hang around—make a day of it. Each June, Mona's Dark Mofo winter festival delves into centuries-old winter solstice rituals and celebrates the dark through art, music, food, film, light and noise.

Amongst the railway collection is the oldest carriage to operate in Tasmania (AB1 - built in the UK in 1869). The first Main Line diesel-electric locomotive (X1) to operate in Australia and the last built English Electric locomotive ZA6. A number of Steam locomotives are also on display. A large model railway is on display in the Road Transport Building and on train running days the Tasmania Fire Museum opens their display to museum visitors.

Saigon Art Gallery

Welcome to Saigon Art Gallery, a space that celebrates three generations of Vietnamese artistry, blending tradition with contemporary influences. The journey began with their grandfather, a master in wood carving and printmaking in Vietnam, whose dedication to the arts inspired the family to explore diverse styles and mediums. Today, the family artists work across disciplines such as wood carving, lino printing, oil painting, and lacquer, each reflecting the rich cultural heritage. While their roots are in Vietnam, they have also found inspiration in Tasmania, Australia. The serene landscapes and unique wildlife of Tasmania have profoundly shaped their artistic expression, creating a distinct style that harmonizes the vibrancy of Vietnamese culture with the tranquillity of Tasmania's natural beauty. The gallery showcases this fusion, offering a unique experience that transcends cultural boundaries. At Saigon Art Gallery, their vision is to create a space where art connects people, fosters appreciation for cultural heritage, and inspires future generations. They invite you to visit and explore the harmony of cultures and landscapes that define their work. Your presence and support are integral to their creative journey, and they look forward to sharing their passion for art with you. With gratitude, The Saigon Art Gallery Family

St Mark's Church Pontville

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

St Mark's Church Pontville

An unusual Romanesque church built in 1839-41 to a design by convict architect James Blackburn from very finely tooled Brighton sandstone. Few travellers driving through Pontville could fail to notice the striking exterior of St Mark's Church, standing on the top of the hill on the north side of Pontville. Convict Architect James Blackburn had been transported from England in 1833 for forgery. Because of his academic qualifications, he was attached to the public works department and within a few years, he had proved his worth by designing plans for a number of churches and public buildings in Hobart and nearby districts. As far as it is known the foundation stone, which unfortunately can no longer be seen, was laid by the then Lieutenant Governor of Tasmania, Sir John Franklin in 1839 but delays resulting from its convict labourers being diverted to other projects, such as the Pontville Bridge and the Watch House meant that the building was not completed until February 1841. It was dedicated on the 21st February that same year by Archdeacon Williams Hutchins. The current Reverend is Mr Rod Curtain.

Runnymede - National Trust House & Gardens

While Australia’s mainland colonies experienced a severe economic depression in the 1840s, Tasmania remained prosperous owing to unpaid convict labour and industries such as wool production and whaling. Runnymede represents Tasmania’s golden age. This Regency marine villa was built by lawyer Robert Pitcairn and Dorothea Pitcairn c1836-1840 and extended by Tasmania’s first Anglican Bishop, Francis Russell Nixon who resided there between 1850 and 1862. Captain Charles Bayley then acquired the house and named it Runnymede after his favourite whaling ship. The Bayley and Bayly families resided in the house for over a century. Enjoy a guided tour of this gracious house with its elegant furnishings, fascinating maritime collections and verdant gardens. Garden: Original 19th century villa garden including a carriage drive surrounding the house, 1840s stables and coach house, cast iron fountain, historic trees and plantings. Runnymede is located on Bay Road, New Town 7008 (15 minutes by car from Hobart CBD via the Brooker Highway, travelling in the direction of MONA). Nearby attractions: Hobart CBD, Penitentiary Chapel and Criminal Courts and MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). Runnymede is available for private events bookings.
