Peggy's Point Bicheno - East Coast Whale Trail

The East Coast Whale Trail is a series of coastal stops you can visit with information signs about the whales and where you have a good chance of seeing them. There are 14 trail sites scattered all along the coast from The Gardens in the larapuna/Bay of Fires area near St Helens in the north to Eaglehawk Neck on the Tasman Peninsula. At each East Coast Whale Trail site, you will find a sign with information and stories about them and big sea views to search for signs of whales. There are binoculars installed at two of the Trail sites to help you get a closer view. Whales can throw their fins and flukes, or even their bodies, high out of the water, making great explosions of foam on the sea surface that can be seen from far away. Sometimes they come within a few hundred metres of shore.

Bicheno Fishing

Sports and Recreation Facilities

Bicheno Kayaking

Due to Bicheno's open exposure to the Tasman Sea many recreational anglers are either rock or beach fishers. A vessel capable of coping with large, unpredictable seas is needed here. Some beach fishing occurs north of Bicheno and also south towards Coles Bay at Friendly Beaches. Australian salmon, flathead and shark are targeted in the surf, while striped trumpeter, barracouta, morwong, leatherjacket and cod are taken offshore. Rocky shores abound around Bicheno and many areas are suitable as fishing platforms. A silver sliced lure is the most common hardware and bait fishing techniques here are less common. There is a marine reserve around Governors Island, opposite The Gulch, which provides an excellent opportunity for diving. The wharf at the Gulch is a popular place to visit in the evenings for salmon, mackerel and trevally to name just a few. It is also a great spot for kids. North of Bicheno are a few accessible beaches that are worth a try if you can find some gutters. In particular, the beach from the turn-off at Four Mile Beach all the way around to the bluff at the southern end of the beach can be good, but look for gutters for the best results.

Bicheno Fishing from the Gulch

If you are taking the family to Bicheno for a holiday, if the wind isn't too severe during Summer, try the wharf at the Gulch in the late afternoon, to the early evening where you may hook Salmon, Mackerel or Trevally – it's a great spot to introduce fishing to kids. It has great broken bottom a Mecca for squid when the weather is calm and you can actually watch them taking your lure, even at night as there is a huge floodlight that shines into the water at the northern end of the jetty, you will know you are in the right spot because there is always a nice collage of squid ink on the decks.

Douglas-Apsley National Park

This understated national park near Bicheno, on the East Coast of Tasmania, is a gem awaiting discovery by those with a real sense of adventure. It’s a place of surprising contrasts, featuring tranquil waterholes, deep river gorges and thundering waterfalls, including the spectacular Apsley Falls. Leeaberra Falls

Natural Attractions

Leeaberra Falls

Just 100 metres downstream from Heritage Falls is Leeaberra Falls, it's smaller but no less pretty twin. Leeaberra Falls tumbles about 8 metres down an unusual twisting drop, into a deep green pool. The easiest way to see the falls is by hiking downstream from the base of Heritage Falls (see that page for information on the hike to that point) where from a little outcrop it is possible to get a decent side-on view of Leeaberra Falls from the top. If you are very keen though, it is possible, albeit difficult to get to the base of the falls. Scrub bash up a ridge on the right bank of the Douglas River, heading over the top and descending steeply on the other side. Similar to the descent to Heritage Falls, the rocky slopes are extremely unstable, however, the difference here is that there is no track, meaning overgrowth also obscures the route down. Having said that, the descent doesn't last too long before dropping you out at the river just downstream of the falls. It is possible to visit Heritage and Leeaberra Falls in a day provided you have a 4WD capable of taking you to the start of the track, however, it is recommended to do the hike as an overnighter, or by continuing on the rest of the 3-day Leeaberra Track.

Douglas-Apsley Loop Track

Douglas-Apsley Loop Track is a walk in Douglas-Apsley National Park. 10-15 minutes return, 1.2km return. Grade 1. The Loop Track is a short, easy walk which leads to the sparkling waters of Apsley Waterhole. This gentle stroll follows a trail through eucalypts and wattle trees, and is suitable for walkers of all ability, including young children. An information booth shows details of other tracks in the area, and signage along the way helps with tree identification. Just 600 metres from the car park, the waterhole is especially popular in summer with both locals and visitors. You can choose to return the same way, or, for a slightly more challenging walk, you can descend a steep side track to the waterhole via the nearby campground. If you do this, remember to bring your bathers and enjoy a swim or a paddle: the water is usually calm and clear, and it's a lovely way to refresh yourself on a summer's day. There are plenty of large boulders where you can sit and dry off, before exploring the rock formations and enjoying a picnic lunch in one of the pretty spots nearby. Please refer to the Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania website (parks.tas.gov.au) for up-to-date information about this walk, alerts, closures, safe walking guidelines, leave no trace principles and National Park entry fees where applicable.

Moulting Lagoon

Natural Attractions

Moulting Lagoon

Moulting Lagoon is a large wetland of extraordinary beauty at the northern end of Great Oyster Bay on Tasmania's east coast. It is internationally recognised because it contains rare and significant wetland plants and animals and supports high numbers of waterfowl and aquatic species. The lagoon provides year-round habitat and breeding sites for many Tasmanian waterfowl in particular black swans and is an important feeding site for birds migrating from the northern hemisphere. There are numerous Aboriginal heritage sites recorded within the Moulting Lagoon area. Evidence confirms that Aboriginal nations have inhabited Trowunna (Tasmania) for at least 37,000 years. The Paredarerme(also known as the Oyster Bay nation) occupied the area at the time of European invasion. The Paredarerme nation included ten bands and their territory covered 7,800 square kilometres. Today this area continues to be significant to the Aboriginal community. All Aboriginal heritage sites are protected under the Aboriginal Relics Act 1975. An ideal location for birdwatching, fishing, kayaking and photography.
