The Sloop Norfolk

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Bass & Flinders Maritime Museum

Inspiring the next generation of explorers! Housings one of Tasmania’s most varied collections of maritime artifacts, the museum showcases the replica Sloop Norfolk, James Kelly's whaleboat the Elizabeth, and the Admiral, the Kenneth Dickenson, the Tamar Class Melanie, the sabot Zephyr 2, rowing fours, canoes, and a tribute to solo round the would quest by Ken Gourley. The Bass and museum also feature an extensive collection of maps and charts, photographs, paintings, logbooks, movies, diaries, and journals. In 1798, explorers Bass and Flinders were dispatched to Van Diemens Land to ascertain if it was an island or not. Sailing with a crew of eight aboard His Majesty's Colonial Sloop Norfolk, they took shelter in the Tamar River, anchoring off what is now George Town. Explore the tale of Bass and Flinders and Tasmania’s rich Maritime History at the Bass and Flinders Maritime Museum. The modern-day Norfolk is a close replica of the original vessel which was built on Norfolk Island. Work on the construction of the replica began in 1994 and was carried out by a group of volunteers assisting the builder. The replica Sloop Norfolk on display here at the Bass and Flinders Museum is built from three endemic Tasmanian timbers; Huon pine (planking), Celery Top pine (keel, frames, mast, and spars), and decorated with Blackwood. George Town Bicentenary Quilts

Local artisans worked for six years on the Low Head, George Town and Bell Bay Quilts using a diverse range of textile techniques. Together these three quilts depict the natural and built environment, the history, development and diverse lifestyle of the whole George Town municipal area with many features from the outer areas of Hillwood, Lefroy, Pipers River and the northern coastal villages included. The final completed quilt was presented to the mayor of the day in November 2008, to accept on behalf of the community. Each time you look, you're bound to find something you haven't seen before. Can you spot the elusive fox on the George Town Quilt or the ghostly depiction of the George Town Female Factory, the Curries River Dam or the Tam O'Shanter Golf Club? The Quilts are displayed in the foyer of the Jim Mooney Gallery, George Town Memorial Hall, which is open between 9 am - 4.00 pm Monday to Friday and whenever there are activities in the hall. Big Rusty Pelican

What is it about Australia and "big things"? It's one of the mysteries of the modern world. Here is a dandy example: the Big Rusty Pelican is the creative output of the Gravelly Beach Metalworks, a family business across the river making "many unique and one-off designs" run by Karin & Michael Gethin. The pelican was made at the behest of Kinimathatakinta/George Town Council who wanted to "enhance public spaces and the relationship between the environment, the community, and the places by creatively recognising the local wildlife."

George Town Rotary Clock

Time waits for nobody and according to the Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy "Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so". So if you are short of time the George Town Rotary Clock can provide as much as you need, one minute at a time. Not as grand as Ulverstone's clock, perhaps, but you can still find out the time. It is a splendid fluted aluminium column in brushed silver grey and yellow. The clock itself is in a gear shaped housing based on the Rotary symbol. The current livery was installed in 2016 after the clock was moved from its previous location outside the Memorial Hall. The project was designed and implemented by a talented team of local Rotarians: David Herring, Rod Green, Chris Ashley, and John Watts. The intricate design of the chamfered aluminium box section was "a bit of a jigsaw puzzle".
