Waterfront Art Trail

Experience the many landmarks along the Waterfront Art Trail. Barcode Fountain - situated along the waterfront near popular bar Edge, this fountain uses stainless steel to showcase a barcode from one of Geelong’s icon products: Noddys soft drink. Especially impressive at night with its blue strip lighting. Cargo Boxes – while at the Barcode Fountain, you may also see some crates. On a closer inspection, you will see that these are no regular crates - each one contains something different inside. Being shackled feet, fruits or rabbits, the crates symbolise the different vessels that came to Geelong and the different things they brought with them. Created by artists Maggie Fookes and Bill Perrin in 2000, they also light up the night. Paving Splats - created by the same artists are these unique and interesting stainless steel and cast inlays that depict important and locally made objects. What a way to jazz up the regular and boring old pavement. North – whether you think they resemble sails or fins you are correct, these seven giant sculptures tower over you at two to three metres high. Made from cast cement panels, no two are positioned on the same frame, making it a fun and interchanging sculpture when moving within and around.

Australian Orphanage Museum

The only one of its kind in Australia, the Australian Orphanage Museum (AOM) is dedicated to exhibiting the authentic accounts of people who grew up in Orphanages, Children's Homes and Foster Care in Australia. Established by the Care Leavers Australasia Network (CLAN) in 2001, the museum started as a small collection of objects and memorabilia to tell the true stories of vulnerable people that endured a dark chapter in Australian history. The museum now comprises over 2,000 items, and CLAN is always looking for new donations of photos and artefacts to further share the stories of Care Leavers and preserve this history for future generations. The museum's diverse exhibits explore three continuing themes: The History of Child Welfare in Australia, The Children's Voices, and Care Leavers Activism. The narratives are presented in ways that respect the rights of Care Leavers to present their own accounts and tell their experience of growing up in institutions. The museum has an extensive library which includes 760 books plus videos, audio cassettes, media articles, reports, theses, manuals and other research documents. Group bookings are welcomed by appointment. The museum is in central Geelong and there is a bus stop out the front. There is also street parking nearby.

Barwon Grange

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Barwon Grange

The only survivor of a fashionable and picturesque mid-nineteenth century villa built along the Barwon River in Geelong. With the Barwon River as the vista, the house was built for successful merchant and banker Jonathon Porter O'Brien and his wife Ann. They filled their Gothic Revival style home with elegant and modern furnishings. Today you can see these recreated interiors, including many decorative and domestic objects from the late 1850s, including a rare Minton ceramic chandelier. The cellar was stocked with wine and spirits, the conservatory filled with plants, sculptures, a collection of coral and two canaries in brass cages. The couple kept an extensive library which featured a Cyclopaedia of Medicine and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The O'Briens lived in the house for only a year but, over 170 years later, the villa's unique features continue to reflect the lifestyle of the 1850s and the prosperous merchants of Geelong, whose wealth grew after the discovery of gold in the Colony.
