Portarlington Golf Club

The Portarlington Golf Club is a golf club and a community hub on the magnificent Bellarine Peninsula. The golf course is near the beach, but it's not a links; it has beautiful trees, but nor is it a parkland course. You can play championship events here, or just knock about on a shorter layout with mates. It's a wonderfully prepared layout which has that rare and much-sought combination of challenge and fun for players at all levels. It features superbly conditioned bent greens, drains quickly and is an easy walk with only gentle undulations. Even better, with a range of tee choices, you will find a length and difficulty that suits your level of play. Inside the modern clubhouse, the bar and bistro are about sharing greatness - great food, great occasions, and great people. The menu provides a tasty mix of modern and traditional cuisine, all with as much local produce as possible – and the fridges are stocked with a wide variety of beverages, highlighting the world-renowned Bellarine vineyards. The golf course pro shop opens daily from 7am most of the year, but at 8am in mid-winter. It operates until 6pm most of the year, but later in the height of summer. The clubhouse opens from 10am daily, closing late at night with meals from 11.30am to 8pm. Check the website for details.

Queenscliffe Maritime Museum

Sea, sand and sail are the key to Queenscliff’s history. Visit Queenscliffe Maritime Museum to discover the treasures of its rich maritime heritage, shaped by its proximity to the entrance of Port Phillip and its notorious ‘rip’. From sea pilots to sailors, fishermen to boat builders, light keepers or ferry captains, the sea has created a world full of stories of boats and maritime industry. Highlighted is the lifeboat 'Queenscliffe' which operated for fifty years rescuing people and ships. Manned by the light keepers and volunteers, including many fishermen, this was the last of the lifeboat service which operated for 120 years. Shipwrecks are numerous in the area, so discover their stories and artefacts amongst the exhibitions. See the old diving equipment and try the diving bell helmet for yourself. Lighthouses have been beacons along the coast, despite changing technologies. The museum has an extensive display of equipment and see inside a Fresnel lens at the museum and join a guided tour of Point Lonsdale Lighthouse on Sunday mornings. With Queenscliff’s unique couta boats, its brave fishermen, and a maritime history stretching back into the early days of Victoria as a colony, there is much more to discover on a visit.

Campbells Cove Boathouses

Colourful and quirky – these heritage-listed boatsheds have brightened the foreshore since the 1920s. Compared with Brighton's pristine bathing boxes, the Campbells Cove boathouses and rugged patch of coastline are relatively untouched; providing a rare glimpse into the history of Melbourne's beach culture. The Campbells Cove Boathouses vary in shape, size and colour. While some have been creatively built using materials at hand, others have been re-built with modern amenities. Take a walk along the shoreline and pick out your favourite. The views across Port Phillip Bay extend all the way to 'The Heads' on a clear day. The beach is in a natural state with an off-lead dog area at one end. Most people come for a walk, but you can do all the normal beach activities here, just don't expect a manicured beach. Campbells Cove is also known as an excellent fishing spot. Getting to Campbells Cove is part of the adventure.
