Patterson River

National Parks and Reserves

Patterson River

Patterson River, the gateway to Port Phillip, is a thriving canal system of the Patterson Lakes residential area. There are four public boat ramps, parking for cars and trailers and riverside picnic facilities making it the perfect venue for family boating expeditions. The National Water Sports Centre nearby is used by a wide range of water sport groups. A man made waterway, created in 1876 to provide direct drainage from the entire Dandenong Valley catchment area. This run-off flowed into the Carrum Swamp, which spread behind the sand dunes between Mordialloc and Frankston with the only outlets to the bay being the Mordialloc Creek and the Kananook Creek at Frankston. In 1934, 960 houses and farms were inundated by floodwaters. It was then decided to raise the levels of the artificial banks between the bay and Pillars Bridge, south of Dandenong. More importantly, it is a course to constantly stimulate and challenge those who play it with regularity. In 2021, Kingston Heath decided to expand its golf offering with the addition of The Furrows - a Short Course that complements the world-renowned Heath course.

McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery

Visit the home of Australian Sculpture, located 45 minutes from Melbourne at the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula. The McClelland story began in the 1930s when Harry McClelland, painter and bohème, purchased 16 hectares of bushland in Langwarrin and built a studio for himself to paint and enjoy nature. Upon the death of his sister Nan McClelland in 1961, it was her wish that Harry's studio and land become a place for arts and culture to be enjoyed by all and in 1971 the McClelland Gallery was built. McClelland has become the home of Australian sculpture with a collection of over 100 outdoor sculptures, 3000 artworks, exhibitions, dynamic education and public programs, with a unique design store and Harry's café focused on highlighting local design and produce from the Mornington Peninsula. The curated exhibition program focuses on the development of modern sculpture, contemporary art, and new forms of spatial practice, and through several awards and commissions McClelland provides opportunities for emerging and established artists, along with students, to develop their professional practice. Throughout the year McClelland's education and public programs provide inspiring events, art talks, artist-led workshops, and monthly music performances for the community to engage, learn and enjoy.
