The Avon River, stretching 122 km in length, originates on the southeastern slopes of Mount Wellington, nestled beneath Miller Spur, a part of the Great Dividing Range within the Avon Wilderness Park. From its mountainous beginnings, the river flows in a meandering path, generally heading south, then east, and finally south by southeast. Along its journey, it is joined by ten tributaries, including the Turton River and the Perry River, before reaching its mouth, where it forms Lake Wellington to the east of Sale and southeast of Stratford. This river is characterized by its broad and shallow nature, boasting a width that varies from 16 to 50 meters. Such dimensions make it an accessible and welcoming destination for anglers and swimmers of all skill levels. The landscape transitions from a densely forested wilderness in its upper reaches to more open farmland as it progresses downstream. Notably, there are extensive pools along the river, some exceeding depths of 150cm, adding to the allure of this natural waterway. Beyond its appeal to fishing enthusiasts, the Avon River is celebrated for its scenic beauty. As it gracefully meanders through lush landscapes, it offers picturesque vistas that captivate nature lovers, photographers, and outdoor adventurers alike.

The Knob Reserve in Stratford is part of the Bataluk Cultural Trail and is an important place for the GunaiKurnai people. The reserve is set on a 56 hectare site with a lookout platform affording views over local farmlands and the Avon River. The reserve is ideal for a picnic with barbeques, tables and chairs and a playground. Migration routes used by the First People passed by what is now the Princes Highway, the Knob Reserve had sheltered campsites and was close to the river and fertile river flats that supplied plenty of good food and water and would have allowed large gatherings of clans from the GunaiKurnai nation to meet for feasting, corroborees and other ceremonies. The current Knob Reserve walk loops around the park and takes in evidence of canoe trees and sandstone outcrops that would have been used to sharpen axe heads. At the crest of the hill, an easy walk from the car park, is a lookout platform where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view across the local farmlands, the foothills and the Avon River.

A significant redevelopment was undertaken in 2004 which saw the precinct reinvigorated to include entertainment, art, heritage and leisure facilities. The development of extensive berthing/mooring facilities, a boardwalk, barbeque/picnic locations and walking paths saw the Port revitalised - and become increasingly popular with both tourists and locals alike. This Centre presently houses the Sale Library, Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale Visitor Centre, Council Chambers, café and community spaces. East of the Centre, the Borun and Tuk Aboriginal cultural walk was created, providing pedestrian access from Foster Street to the Port itself. The path includes lighting, landscaping and culturally significant canoe seating, whilst also telling the Gunaikurnai creation story of Borun the pelican and Tuk the musk duck. West of the Centre, the Sale Skate Park received a significant facelift and expansion to become one of the best skate facilities east of Melbourne. This area also includes a multi-court facility, barbeque shelter and an all-ages play space. Visually attractive and informative signage, combined with paving and landscaping seamlessly link all aspects of the precinct together. Today, the Port Precinct is regarded as Sale's cultural and entertainment hub and is considered one of Gippsland's must-visit tourism locations.

Colonial Governments in Victoria built Powder Magazines to provide safe conditions for the storage of explosive powder which was used by the gold mining industry. Built in 1864-65, the Sale Powder Magazine served the needs of North and East Gippsland. The Sale Powder Magazine has massive walls and buttresses and barrel vaulting in the ceiling. To reduce the chance of an accidental explosion, timber dowels were used to fix the flooring. Barrack like in appearance, the building is almost encircled by the watercourse of Flooding Creek, historically giving it a buffer from bushfires. The Magazine became private property around 1925 and in 1995 it was rediscovered through a heritage study conducted by the former City of Sale having been used as a private residence for many years. The property is now owned by the Wellington Shire Council, who utilised the services of a heritage architect to produce a schedule of work for its restoration. It is managed by a Committee of Management responsible to the Sale Historical Society.

The Sale Botanic Gardens sits next to the Lake Guthridge precinct and contains beautiful gardens, grassed areas, paved walking areas, a playground (including flying fox), undercover picnic areas, sculptures, a fauna enclosure, a sensory garden, elm forest and the Lakeside Entertainment and Arts Facility. A recent addition to the gardens has been the Nakunbalook Environmental and Cultural Education Centre which is a joint project between Wellington Shire Council and GLaWAC, providing an all-weather facility for the community to host events and programs with a focus on sustainability and culture. The Sale Botanic Gardens originated in 1860 when approximately 20 hectares of land was set aside as a botanic garden. Twenty four years later, additional swampy land, now Lake Guthridge, was included in the site. Over the ensuing years, the site has endured many incursions and changes, including use as a golf course and appropriation of various sections for sporting activities and the construction of a fauna park. The Gardens owe their botanic heritage to Baron Ferdinand Von Mueller, the first state botanist, and Mr William Guilfoyle, the then director of the Royal Melbourne Botanic Gardens. As well as an abundance of bird life visiting the parklands nearby, there is a comtemporary fauna enclosure containing Red-Necked Wallabies, Pademelons and Parma Wallabies set into a landscaped natural environment with excellent viewing opportunities.
