Mooroop Yarkeen

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website page contains the names of deceased persons. Look up. There in the sky, you'll see Bunjil the creator, the Wedge-tailed Eagle soaring above Werribee's skyline as part of the huge, 41-metre-tall mural, Mooroop Yarkeen (Spirit Dreaming) by Indigenous artist Tommy Day/Jirri Jirri. Stretching across the façade of Holiday Inn Werribee, the design incorporates the Wirribi Yaluk (Werribee River), sandhills and Basalt plains, welcoming gum leaves, community coming together in unity, dreaming, and Bunjil's flight. Artist Tommy Day/Jirri Jirri represented by MAMAM, is a Gunditjmara, Yorta, Yorta and Wemba Wemba man and multi-disciplined artist based in Shepparton, Victoria. Commissioned by Wyndham City, this First Nations mural is one of the largest in Australia. The mural was commissioned and designed in consultation with Bunurong Traditional Owners. Mooroop Yarkeen is even more spectacular in the late afternoon, as the sun dips lower in the west and casts it in a warm glow. Take in Mooroop Yarkeen on the free, self-guided Werribee Public Art Walking Tour. At each stop on this one-kilometre trail in Werribee City Centre, you can scan a QR Code to listen to the artist talk about their work – no apps required. Werribee River

Stroll, cycle, fish, kayak or simply relax along the banks of the Werribee River. The river winds through the very heart of the Werribee region. You can follow the river using shared bike and walking trails as it winds its way through Werribee, past the farming land in the north, through Werribee City Centre and out to the Werribee River Park. The river eventually travels through to Werribee South Market Gardens, past the K Road Cliffs to Werribee South Beach, where it meets Port Phillip Bay. Ancient River Red Gums line the banks and the ever-elusive Platypus also calls Werribee River home. You will see an abundance of birdlife all along the river and you can’t help but hear the birds; cheeky kookaburras, cockatoos and the quarrelsome honeyeater. If you are very quiet, you might also spot wallabies in the woodlands of Werribee River Park. If you are looking for a family adventure, a great place to start is in Werribee City Centre where you can grab a coffee and head to Wyndham Park, with playgrounds and picnic areas on the banks of the river. Enjoy the old-school cool of this inner-city oasis. The Werribee Outdoor Pool has two pools to cool off in: a 50-metre lap pool including ramp access and a family pool that's ideal for toddlers and older children. Both pools are heated. The family pool has a fun bubble area and a small waterfall that you can't help but want to rest under. Many a game of tiggy and Marco Polo have been played here. Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary

Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary

Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary is located in the north east corner of Port Phillip Bay, a mere 30 minute drive from Melbourne. The park protects 290 hectare of a typical Port Phillip western shoreline which makes it the largest park in Victoria's system of marine national parks and sanctuaries. The park is largely protected from the hype of the suburbs by the coastal dunes and adjacent wetlands of the Point Cook Coastal Park and Cheetham Wetlands. Off the coast a series of basalt cliffs rise from the muddy seafloor, the remains of a larval flow that poured across the plains thousands of years ago. A combination of narrow sandy beaches, rocky reefs and mud flats, this park hosts a huge diversity of marine and coastal life. Pods of bottlenose dolphins visit the sanctuary and in summer, swarms of jellyfish pulsate over the reef. Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website. Be bushfire ready in the great outdoors. Campbells Cove Boathouses

Colourful and quirky – these heritage-listed boatsheds have brightened the foreshore since the 1920s. Compared with Brighton's pristine bathing boxes, the Campbells Cove boathouses and rugged patch of coastline are relatively untouched; providing a rare glimpse into the history of Melbourne's beach culture. The Campbells Cove Boathouses vary in shape, size and colour. While some have been creatively built using materials at hand, others have been re-built with modern amenities. Take a walk along the shoreline and pick out your favourite. The views across Port Phillip Bay extend all the way to 'The Heads' on a clear day. The beach is in a natural state with an off-lead dog area at one end. Most people come for a walk, but you can do all the normal beach activities here, just don't expect a manicured beach. Campbells Cove is also known as an excellent fishing spot. Getting to Campbells Cove is part of the adventure. Cheetham Wetlands

Cheetham Wetlands consists of lagoons and saltmarsh of varying salinity levels created through the activities of a Saltworks that used to operate in the area. Deliberate creation of a number of relatively shallow ponds provides an environment which attracts many birds who like to feed on vegetation, insects, larvae and other small animals both in the water and on the pond floor. At different times, Cheetham Wetlands has been home to over two hundred species of birds. Many birds return year after year. These birds breed mainly in the northern hemisphere during June and July and migrate southwards between July and November. The Wetlands are protected, through international agreements, as important habitats for wildlife and are not open to the public. The only way to view the wetlands is from the observation tower.
