One of the sweeping views available from Truganina Park

Natural Attractions

Truganina Park

Truganina Park is one of Melbourne's west's most distinctive open space destinations, offering panoramic views across Melbourne, Port Phillip Bay and the surrounding wetlands. The park is home to the iconic 100 Steps to Federation, a staircase constructed from recycled basalt that leads visitors to one of the highest natural vantage points between Melbourne and the You Yangs. At the summit, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views across the region and can discover Time Beacon, a striking public artwork by Australian artist Cameron Robbins. Large open spaces, walking and cycling paths, and connections to surrounding coastal parklands make Truganina Park a popular destination for recreation, sightseeing and outdoor exploration. The park's elevated location and unique landscape provide a memorable experience for visitors seeking nature, photography opportunities and some of the best views in Hobsons Bay.

Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary

National Parks and Reserves

Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary

Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary is located in the north east corner of Port Phillip Bay, a mere 30 minute drive from Melbourne. The park protects 290 hectare of a typical Port Phillip western shoreline which makes it the largest park in Victoria's system of marine national parks and sanctuaries. The park is largely protected from the hype of the suburbs by the coastal dunes and adjacent wetlands of the Point Cook Coastal Park and Cheetham Wetlands. Off the coast a series of basalt cliffs rise from the muddy seafloor, the remains of a larval flow that poured across the plains thousands of years ago. A combination of narrow sandy beaches, rocky reefs and mud flats, this park hosts a huge diversity of marine and coastal life. Pods of bottlenose dolphins visit the sanctuary and in summer, swarms of jellyfish pulsate over the reef. Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website. Be bushfire ready in the great outdoors. Cheetham Wetlands

National Parks and Reserves

Cheetham Wetlands

Cheetham Wetlands consists of lagoons and saltmarsh of varying salinity levels created through the activities of a Saltworks that used to operate in the area. Deliberate creation of a number of relatively shallow ponds provides an environment which attracts many birds who like to feed on vegetation, insects, larvae and other small animals both in the water and on the pond floor. At different times, Cheetham Wetlands has been home to over two hundred species of birds. Many birds return year after year. These birds breed mainly in the northern hemisphere during June and July and migrate southwards between July and November. The Wetlands are protected, through international agreements, as important habitats for wildlife and are not open to the public. The only way to view the wetlands is from the observation tower. Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website. Birdlife in Werribee and Surrounds

Werribee River, the abundance of wetland habitats and the coastal line make the region a haven for birdlife and birdwatchers. Hundreds of species call this region home, with migratory shorebirds flying from as far as Siberia, Japan and Alaska. Point Cook Coastal Park and Cheetham Wetlands are one of Australia's most important wetlands. Campbells Cove Boathouses

Colourful and quirky – these heritage-listed boatsheds have brightened the foreshore since the 1920s. Compared with Brighton's pristine bathing boxes, the Campbells Cove boathouses and rugged patch of coastline are relatively untouched; providing a rare glimpse into the history of Melbourne's beach culture. The Campbells Cove Boathouses vary in shape, size and colour. While some have been creatively built using materials at hand, others have been re-built with modern amenities. Take a walk along the shoreline and pick out your favourite. The views across Port Phillip Bay extend all the way to 'The Heads' on a clear day. The beach is in a natural state with an off-lead dog area at one end. Most people come for a walk, but you can do all the normal beach activities here, just don't expect a manicured beach. Campbells Cove is also known as an excellent fishing spot. Getting to Campbells Cove is part of the adventure. You will need a car to travel through the market gardens of Werribee South and along the farm road – until you can see the waters of the Bay.
