Cooks' Cottage

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Cooks' Cottage

Originally located in Yorkshire, England, and built by the parents of Captain James Cook, the cottage was brought to Melbourne by Sir Russell Grimwade in 1934. Astonishingly, each brick was individually numbered, packed into barrels and then shipped to Australia. Navigator and explorer Captain James Cook never lived in the cottage – he’d been away from home for almost 10 years when his father built it – but this connection to the Cook family was enough to prompt Grimwade to transport the cottage to the other side of the world. Combining modern interpretations of Captain Cook's adventures, centuries-old antiques, a delightful English cottage garden, volunteers dressed in 18th century costumes and an interpretive space in the stable, Cooks' Cottage is a fascinating step back in time. Entry to the cottage includes a comprehensive fact sheet for a self-guided tour. Available in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Thai, Indonesian, Japanese, German, French, Vietnamese and Korean. School tours and group tours and visits are also available. Tickets and souvenirs can be purchased from the Fitzroy Gardens Visitor Centre, just 100 metres away.

Mary Glowrey Museum

The Mary Glowrey Museum tells the story of Dr Sr Mary Glowrey JMJ (1887-1957), a Victorian born and educated doctor, who went to Guntur, India, in 1920, where she became a religious Sister. As Sister Mary of the Sacred Heart JMJ, she spent the rest of her life serving the medical and spiritual needs of the most marginalised people. She oversaw the medical care of hundreds of thousands of people and set up training systems and medical networks, including the Catholic Health Association of India, which today serves more than 21 million people annually. On 21 November 2025, Pope Leo XIV recognised Mary's heroic virtues, and she became titled Venerable Mary of the Sacred Heart Glowrey, only the second Australian to be accorded this status The Mary Glowrey Museum is situated on Level two of the historic Cathedral Hall, today part of the Fitzroy campus of Australian Catholic University. Visitors are asked to book in advance via email, so as to facilitate guided tours. Groups are particularly welcome. Old Treasury Building

The Old Treasury is regarded as one of the finest public buildings in Australia. Completed in 1862, it was the major government office in Melbourne throughout the 19th century, and second only to Parliament House as the centre of state affairs. Designed by a 19 year old architect, John James Clark, it is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of Renaissance Revival architecture in Australia. Until 1992, the building housed a succession of government departments including the city office of the Victorian Governor. Restored and opened to the public as a museum in 1994, it provides an ideal orientation to Melbourne for visitors wishing to understand and explore the city's history, architecture, art and contemporary life. It houses permanent exhibitions: 'Yarra: Stories of Melbournes River', 'Melbourne: Foundations of a City', 'Making Modern Melbourne' 'Protest Melbourne', Growing Up in the Old Treasury' and the story of gold in the original vaults. Current temporary exhibition 'Belongings: Objects and Family Life' looks at the objects you own and how you've changed them, and they've changed you. See areas of the building inaccessible to the general public, including the Executive Council Chamber, find out more about Melbourne's fascinating gold rush past and see rare paintings from the Roy Morgan Research Centre collection by joining their monthly guided tour.

Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre

Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre respectfully acknowledges the traditional owners of Melbourne, the Boonwurrung and the Woi wurrung language groups of the greater Kulin nation. The museum is on land where Aboriginal people have lived, laughed, fought, married, dreamed and died for thousands of years. Now, in Bunjilaka, they tell the story of survival against the odds and celebrate their vibrant cultures through performances, storytelling, artwork and more. With the opening of First Peoples in 2013, Bunjilaka presents the Koorie experience with immense power, depth and respect in a major permanent exhibition entirely co-created with Aboriginal people. Bunjilaka's art space, Birrarung Gallery, holds three exhibitions a year of work by contemporary Koorie artists. Birrarung looks out to Milari Garden where they grow plants of significance to the First Peoples of Victoria. Kalaya is their performance space. Judy Watson's major artwork Wurreka adorns the wall outside First Peoples, which leads into a gallery for temporary and touring exhibitions about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. The Stronger Families, Stronger Communities exhibition elevates the voices of nine First Nations men who have taken part in Dardi Munwurro's healing and leadership programs. The exhibition welcomes the broader community into a space of truth-telling, encourages greater understanding of First Peoples' experiences, and supports Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre's commitment to accessibility, equity, and cultural celebration.

Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park

Accessible only by boat, Herring Island, 3.2 hectares in size, is just three kilometres from the city, and the only substantial island in the Yarra River. This informal parkland has provided the inspiration for curator Maudie Palmer to develop a concept in which artists are commissioned to create site-specific sculptures. Internationally renowned British environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy has created two works - a slate Cairn and a Stone House constructed from Dunkeld sandstone. Four Australian artists have also installed works on Herring Island: John Davis - A Hill, a River, Two Rocks and a Presence, Jill Peck - Steerage, Julie Collins - Audience, Robert James - The Ramp and Torres Strait Islander, Ellen Jose - Tanderrum. Melbourne horticulturist Iain Shears has designed a Native Wild Garden using patterns and species which occur naturally in temperate grasslands in Victoria.
