Heide Museum of Modern Art

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Heide Museum of Modern Art

Heide is a public art museum and sculpture park located on a stretch of the Birrarung/Yarra River in Melbourne that has long served as a meeting point and as a creative hub. Once a significant Wurundjeri gathering place, the site later attracted the artists of the Australian Impressionist School before becoming the home of art patrons John and Sunday Reed in 1934. The Reeds and their circle of artists and writers embraced the brave and the new in art and ideas and their spirited legacy inspires the museum's activities today, from collaborating with emerging and mid-career artists to celebrating those who have made major contributions to Australian and international art. Set on 6.5 hectares of parkland with five gallery spaces, award-winning architecture and a distinctive collection of more than 3,600 works of art, Heide holds a special place in the cultural landscape of Australia.

Banksia Park

The open space, playgrounds and picnic areas of Banksia Park, within the Yarra Valley Parklands make it a popular location for visitors. The park can be accessed from Templestowe Road, Bulleen and is the perfect place for cyclists, joggers, walkers and for a breath of fresh air. The area has a picnic shelter and tables, playground, accessible toilets and drinking water. There are no litter bins on site, however coal bins are available for the disposal of cold coals only. Please take all other rubbish away for recycling or disposal. Follow the Heritage Trail and learn about our history and special significance of the Aboriginal sites, view the plentiful water fowl in the wetlands, or walk the Heidelberg Artists Trail. Organised groups of more than 50 people require a permit from Parks Victoria. In 1841, a punt was installed on the Yarra River at the site of the bridge at Banksia Park. It opened the best route between Melbourne and the Bulleen-Templestowe area enabling the earliest Europeans to settle along the rich river flats. Banksia Park was the first part of the Yarra Valley Parklands to be opened to the public in 1978. Before traveling, visit Parks Victoria's website to check for changes in park conditions which may impact your visit. Yarra Valley Parklands

Yarra Valley Parklands extend along the Yarra River and provide visitors with a wide range of recreational opportunities, from picnicking to canoeing and even camping. The parks include Westerfolds, Banksia, Birrarrung and Candlebark parks, Yarra Flats, Sweeneys Flat and Longridge Park Camp. The parklands form a significant 'backbone' of interconnecting trails, linear parks, wetlands and waterways throughout the metropolitan area. The ongoing effort revegetating the parklands, mostly with the aid of valued community groups planting about 30,000 trees per year, has seen the return of a number of significant wildlife species. Yarra Valley Parklands is part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape in the traditional Country of the Wurundjeri People. Parks Victoria respects the deep and continuing connection that Traditional Owners have to these lands and waters, and we recognise their ongoing role in caring for Country. Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. Before your visit, please check the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website for updated changes of conditions and familiarise yourself with important bushfire safety information to ensure your experience is safe and enjoyable.
