Marysville and District Historical Society

The Marysville and District Historical Society was founded in 1969 and was previously housed in the former RSL Building. In 2009, the Black Saturday bushfires destroyed this building and the Society's collection. The Society purchased its current premises in 2010 and since then has set about rebuilding its collection, much of which is displayed within its History Centre. The History Centre houses a comprehensive collection that tells the many stories of the district. The collection includes photographs, images, objects, registers, documents, letters, textiles, digital forms, and research material. The History Centre also has a strong educative philosophy and aims to use the collection to educate the public and enable research. Much of the Society's collection has been catalogued on the Victorian Collections database and has either been digitally scanned or photographed and this is an ongoing work in progress. Group tours and special museum openings are available by request.

Michaeldene Trail

The Michaeldene Trail is a level two loop that may be undertaken as either as a Short (2.7 kilometres) Loop, or a Long (4.3 kilometres) Loop - 30 minutes to one hour and a half. The well-formed trail ranges from clay to gravel and stone in some parts. It crosses over several dirt roads but is clearly signposted and easy to follow. The attractive bushland linking the Steavenson and Taggerty Rivers allows walkers and cyclists to step back in time to Marysville's historic logging past. Sections of this mostly flat circuit follow old tramline alignments, which in places reveal the original timber sleepers on which the big logs were transported to the nearby sawmill. The Taggerty River Lookout offers views over the Taggerty River. The Trestle Bridge was built to span a small gully and provide access to the timber on Red Hill. If you cross the trestle bridge you'll also find you can access the Red Hill track or return to your car via the Michaeldene Track.

Phantom Falls

As the Taggerty River winds its way through the valley floor, a few kilometres west of Marysville along the well-maintained gravel road Lady Talbot Drive, you'll find beautiful Phantom Falls. For falls access, follow the signs veering left along a fern-lined track of approximately 100 metres. Suitable for two wheel drive in dry weather only, there is room for a couple of cars to park near the walking trail access point. Phantom Falls cascades over granite boulders before disappearing into the undergrowth and lush fern gully and Taggerty River below.
