Pomonal Tunnel Walking Track

The Pomonal Tunnel Walking Track offers a rewarding blend of history, nature and gentle adventure on the eastern side of the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park. Beginning near the village of Pomonal, the trail follows a steady rise through open woodland, where native wildflowers and birdlife are common companions. The highlight is the hand‑cut rock tunnel, created in the late 1800s as part of an early water‑race system. Beyond the tunnel, the track opens to views across the valley toward the Mount William and Serra ranges, making it a favourite spot for photographers and walkers seeking a quieter alternative to Gariwerd's major lookouts. The return walk is rated as moderate to hard. There are a relatively steep uphill and downhill (return) gradients on this track and after rain, it can become very difficult.

Heatherlie Quarry sits deep in the northern Grampians, a quiet pocket of history shaped by stone, sweat and the steady work of skilled stonemasons. Visitors can wander past old machinery, rusted rail lines and the remains of workers' huts, each offering a glimpse into the lives of the people who carved the stone used in landmarks across Victoria. The quarry walls rise in warm shades of gold and ochre, catching the light in a way that makes the landscape feel both ancient and purposeful. Bunjil Shelter - Stawell

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Bunjil Shelter - Stawell

Bunjil Shelter is located in the Black Range Scenic Reserve near Stawell and this is the only rockart painting of Bunjil known. It is widely regarded as one of the most significant cultural sites in south eastern Australia. Bunjil does no harm; I think he does well. These words were spoken by John Connolly, of the Jardwadjali people a little north of here, and recorded by A.W. Howitt. In 1884 Connolly added that Bunjil was a man, and was the father of all his people. Bunjil Shelter sits within the Gariwerd, a cultural landscape that supports people both physically and spiritually. Bunjil created our land, our people, the plants and animals, our religion and the laws by which we live. He is the leading figure in our spiritual life, essential in teaching young people the importance of laws and beliefs, Levi Lovett, local custodian, Parks Victoria.

Billimina Rock Art Site - Wartook Valley

Billimina shelter is an impressive rock overhang where Jardwadjali camped from time to time and left many red paintings. Archaeologists who excavated this site in 1976 found stone tools and the remains of plant and animal foods. These materials demonstrated that groups camped here from late winter to early summer and caught kangaroos and small mammals such as bandicoots, possums and bettongs. They also collected emu eggs and freshwater mussels. The most interesting aspect of the paintings at Billimina is the many bars arranged in horizontal rows. We believe these marks were used to count events in retelling stories or to record the number of days spent at a place. While they are sometimes difficult to see, there are also emus, kangaroo and emu tracks, and 55 human stick figures painted here. Some of the human figures found in the middle panel are illustrated above, see if you can find them.

Ngamadjidj Shelter - Wartook Valley

Ngamadjidj (pronounced NG as in sing, DJ as in jaw) is on the western edge of the ranges near a small secluded waterhole. Remains of campfires and stone tools used by the Jardwadjali have been found here, which suggests it was a favoured camping place. The paintings at this site are unusual because only white clay was used. Elsewhere in Gariwerd the paintings were mostly done with red pigment. The remnants of sixteen painted figures are on this panel, but some are becoming very faint. Unfortunately nothing is known about the meaning of these paintings. The traditional lifestyle of the Jarwadjali was destroyed before it could be recorded.

It has been designed to incorporate and blend with the natural surroundings and picturesque farming land. Many travellers tour the Great Ocean Road and then head north to the majesty of the mountains, a round trip from Melbourne. The studio is conveniently located to the north of Dunkeld and to the south of Halls Gap. There are prominent road signs from both directions. For Ros, painting is a passion and form of expression in which to escape and explore visually and mentally. Ros' aim is to create images that please and challenge the senses. Oil paintings are available on canvas, stretched canvas and board, both framed and unframed. There is also a limited range of prints of popular works. Ros is happy to discuss commissions.

Gulgurn Manja Shelter - Laharum

Gulgurn Manja (pronounced Gulkurn Manya) meaning hands of young people, is a rock shelter at the northern tip of Gariwerd. From here the small groups of Jardwadjali would have been ideally positioned to see the fires of other groups on the plains to the north. They also used the local finegrained sandstone to make stone tools. Marks where stone has been broken from the walls can still be seen in this shelter. The paintings at Gulgurn Manja include bars, emu tracks and handprints. Handprints such as these are only found in northern Gariwerd, and many here were done by children, hence the Aboriginal name for the site. These paintings were part of a unique local art style, which was used to tell stories and pass on the law of the people.
