Mitchies Jetty

Mitchies Jetty is a quintessential Merimbula destination, located on the sparkling shores of Merimbula Lake. Originally built as a fishermen's "net shed" in the 1920s, the site was bought by Don Mitchelson who replaced the jetty and shed in the 1940s - early 1950s. The colourful shack is now an icon of Merimbula and perhaps one of the most photographed locations on the Sapphire Coast! Mitchies Jetty is a popular coastal hangout for young families, especially in the summer months when jumping off the jetty is a favourite pastime. The crystal-clear waters and surrounding foreshore are perfect for sheltered swimming, SUPing, kayaking and fishing. Mitchies Espresso Bar is open in the mornings all year round, serving delicious Wild Ryes coffee and baked treats. Stroll around the estuary mouth for a walk along Main Beach, or follow the paved walking path along the lake's foreshore towards Merimbula Bridge for serene lake vistas. SUP and kayak hire are available from the jetty, as well as regular fishing charters with Fishpen Charters. Mitchies Jetty is located in Fishpen within walking distance from Merimbula township.

Merimbula Boardwalk

Please note: Recent high tides and powerful winds have caused damage to the timber structure at the eastern end of Merimbula Boardwalk near Merimbula Bridge, prompting Bega Valley Shire Council to close this section for public safety. Repair works on the western end of the Merimbula Boardwalk near Sunny's Kiosk are now complete, and this section of the popular lakeside walk has reopened. Merimbula Boardwalk meanders around the lake shore and through mangrove forests, under eucalyptus canopies and past pristine oyster farms. It's approximately 3.4 kilometres return and will take around 1.5 leisurely hours to complete. It's famous for sunset views, and dotted with seats and jetties to enjoy them. Look for Merimbula's resident seal, who sleeps nearby and patrols the oyster leases looking for fish to snack on.  Sunny's Kiosk is a great place to grab a coffee or hire a boat or kayak to get out on the water. Begin from Lakewood Drive at the back of the lake or park next to the bridge at the bottom of Market Street. Please note, no bike access on the boardwalk. Foot traffic only. Old School Museum

Housed in a heritage building dating from 1873, Merimbula Old School Museum is one of few buildings of its type remaining in Australia today. Built with locally quarried stone, the building was originally built as a school with the master's residence attached. It is a rare example of this type of complex under the one roof remaining in public ownership in NSW. In 1971 the Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society was given permissive occupancy of the building and after undertaking extensive restoration work, began operating the museum in 1973. The structure is listed on the register of the National Trust of Australia. Wander the displays and discover stories of Merimbula and Pambula through text, photos and artefacts, tracing the history from the custodianship of the Yuin people through to the development of local industries. The museum is open on select days or by appointment and is highly recommended for those keen on the history of the area.

Merimbula Old School Museum

Merimbula Old School Museum

The Merimbula Old School Museum occupies the sandstone building in Main Street that was the former teacher's residence and classroom, all under one roof. It is a rare example of this type of building still held in public ownership in NSW. Formal application for a school at Merimbula was made in October 1869, signed by the Rev. W. Thom, Adam K. Page and Armstrong L. Munn. Parents undertook to pay one-third of the cost of the building. Sir William Montague Manning donated the land on Main Street, and the school began in temporary premises on the site in 1870. The stone building was first occupied in October 1875 with an enrolment of 39 children. The building was vacated at the end of 1945, and the school moved to a new site on Main Street in premises which have been enlarged over the years. The residence was repaired and leased for accommodation, and the schoolroom was used for community purposes for a number of years. The building was eventually abandoned. In 1967, the Imlay Historical Society was formed and requested permission to use the building as a museum, which, after extensive repairs, was opened in 1973. This NSW National Trust-classified building is leased from the BVSC and managed by the Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society.

Merimbula Bar Beach

A small, beautiful beach on Merimbula Lake, famous for its stunning turquoise channel and breathtaking views across Merimbula Bay and the rolling hinterland. Bar Beach is sheltered from summer’s northerly winds and has outdoor showers and amenities. In the warmer months, you can grab a coffee or a healthy bite from Bar Beach Kiosk, one of the region's famous beachside eateries. Bar Beach is patrolled seven days a week in the summer. It is wave-free but lies on the channel of Merimbula Lake which can have strong tidal currents. Floating down the channel on the outgoing tide is a popular pastime, but beware of boats and rips. Walk along the rocks towards the lake for a more secluded swim, or down towards the mouth for some excellent snorkelling. "The Bar" surf break is popular with mal riders and stand-up paddle boarders, as well as short board riders when the conditions align.

Merimbula Wharf

Merimbula Wharf is a wonderful spot to throw in a line and take in the pristine beauty of Merimbula Bay. Watch the comings and goings of Merimbula Lake, discover marine life and enjoy beautiful seafood at the Merimbula Wharf Restaurant. Great for squid in the cooler months, the best time for fishing at the wharf is half an hour before sunset with the dominant fish species being bream, flathead, snapper, tailor, squid, gummy shark and whiting. Even if you're not into fishing, the wharf is a great spot for dolphin and stingray spotting, and whale watching in the spring. From the late 1800s - mid 1900s, the site was a prominent port in the coastal shipping trade along the east coast. The first structure, a platform with drawbridge, meant that travellers no longer had to cross the dangerous Merimbula Bar. However, during strong winds it was still a risky berth for steamer captains, who often had to decide whether to pull into Tathra or hope for the best at Merimbula. The current structure was built in 1983, thanks to the efforts of local fishermen who fundraised the build. Below Merimbula Wharf, the Devonian red rock beds are a significant geological feature. To access these ancient rocks, look for the walkway to the left of the wharf.
