Celebrating the building's 110th anniversary in November 2019

Dimboola Imaginarium

The Dimboola Imaginarium is a whimsical gift shop and accommodation housed in the former National Bank of Australasia Limited building. Constructed 1909 in Renaissance-style architecture, the redbrick building has a bank manager’s residence and a garden with stables. The building has retained most of its original character and was an emblem of the Wimmera’s agricultural prosperity. The Oriental Bank originally occupied the site of the current premises in 1883 when it built new weatherboard premises. At the time, the Dimboola Oriental Bank was the only bank between Horsham and the South Australian border. In August 1884, the National Bank of Australasia purchased the premises from the failed Oriental Bank for the sum of £1,600. This present two-storeyed structure of some 40 squares cost £3,570 to build in nine months. The bank closed its doors on 9 August 2002. The building is currently used as a private residence, but the cavernous bank chamber is a combined living room and a shop filled with quirky and unique gifts worldwide. Since November 2019, the Dimboola Imaginarium has used the building's impressive architectural elements to create a delightful stage for experiencing wonder in shopping and travelling. You never know what you will find in Dimboola.

Dimboola Murals

Explore the beautiful colours and artsy side of the Dimboola murals as you discover them during your visit to the town. The Travis Price Mural was created by street artist Travis Price who grew up in Dimboola. He returned to create a fantastic mural near the town library reflecting the the history of the township and local area. Travis draws inspiration for the artwork from the Wimmera River, which was an epicentre for activity and adventure when he was growing up. From swimming and fishing through to skiing and rowing, the river has always been a huge advantage over other towns within the region. The mural aims to convey the sense of freedom felt by the artist around the river as a teenager, with the focal point of the mural depicting a young woman submerged under the rivers surface guided by its current, flowing into a wreath of wheat and wattle. The design uses heritage style signage as reference to the heritage overlay of its location and acknowledges the traditional owners of the land, the Wotjobaluk people along with references to the towns previous and original names. The Smug Mural was created by internationally renowned street artist Smug while staying in Dimboola painting the nearby Arkona Silo. The mural is found along the lane linking Lochiel Street to the rear of the Dimboola library.

Many species of plants and animals have succeeded, on poor soils with little water, in creating a kind of arid landscape where survival depends on maintaining a delicate balance of natural forces. The best time to visit the park is between late winter and early summer when the temperatures are comfortable and the park is full of blossoms and wildflowers. Camp beside the Wimmera River, and enjoy bushwalks, birdwatching or four-wheel driving. Arkona Silo Art

Ten kilometres north of Dimboola on the Dimboola-Rainbow Road lies the stunning silo art featuring Arkona local, Roley Klinge. It also highlights the importance of country tennis to these small communities, a major social event through the summer months. World renowned mural artist Smug faced the challenge of painting a silo sized photorealistic mural without being able to meet and photograph the subject. Unfortunately Roley had passed in 1991. To overcome this, Smug came up with an ingenious and original concept, not painting the body at all. Not physically painting the body makes this a unique mural that can appeal to all walks of life to interact with the playful tone of the artwork. This approach also puts the focus back onto country tennis, as important as football and other sports to regional communities. Although he did manage to sneak in a small portrait, plus cleverly incorporating "Roley" into a gold watch, something as iconic as Roley's terry-towelling hat and glasses.

Jeparit Heritage Walk

Take this self guided town walk to explore the history of Jeparit. Jeparit was surveyed in 1883 and gazetted on the 13th of July, 1903. The post office opened on 31 August, 1889, and the town was known as Lake Hindmarsh until December of that year. Two earlier post offices called Lake Hindmarsh had existed in the area at various times since 1861 to serve a smaller population of graziers. The area around Jeparit had been home to the Gromiluk Aborigines prior to European settlement. The name Jeparit is believed to be derived from a Gromiluk word meaning home of small birds. European settlement began in the 1880s when German Lutheran immigrants began to settle and grow wheat. The town is the birthplace of Australia's legendary Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies. He was Australia's longest-serving Prime Minister, 1939-1941 and 1949-1966, keeping the top job for over 18 years. In honour of Sir Robert Menzies, his achievements and political success, Jeparit has erected a spire, a town square, and a plaque. Information about the sites can be found on plaques along the walk, with further information found via the Visit Hindmarsh website.
