Bullocks Hut

Bullocks Hut

Some places are so remarkable, they seem tailor made for special occasions. Bullocks Hut, not far from Jindabyne and Thredbo in Kosciuszko National Park, is just such a place. Framed by dramatic mountains and flat grassy areas, Bullocks Hut sits scenically in a valley where the waters of the Thredbo River and Little Thredbo River meet. Built in 1934 as a fishing lodge for Dr Bullock, the hut is an ideal setting for weddings. Many couples agree - it's not unusual to see a bride wandering past the hut, particularly in summer, or a group huddling together on the picturesque banks for a photograph. Bullocks Hut is popular with visitors drawn by its fishing, picnic, walking and mountain biking opportunities. It's a highlight along Bullocks track walk and within easy reach of the Thredbo Valley track, making it a great option for an afternoon ride or stroll to nearby Thredbo Diggings campground to finish off your day.

Bullocks Walking Track

Reconnect with nature on a short, easy walk along Bullocks track, which follows the Thredbo River between Thredbo Diggings campground and Bullocks Hut, in Kosciuszko National Park. Starting from Thredbo Diggings campground or Bullocks Flat Skitube carpark D, this short walk meanders alongside the Thredbo River for 2.5 kilometres. As you stroll along the Thredbo River, you'll be treated to views of the rocky Ramshead Range, which is often capped with snow. If you bring your fishing gear there are plenty of spots to try your luck catching trout. The glassy waters of the river are so clear you're likely to spot fish swimming their way upstream. Be sure to keep a look out for platypus in the pools around dawn and dusk. Historic Bullocks Hut is a highlight of the walk. Located near Bullocks Flat, at the junction of the Thredbo River and Little Thredbo River, it was built in 1934 as a holiday cottage for Dr H. Bullock. Return same way. From Bullocks Hut, you can also continue around one kilometre to Lake Crackenback.

Blue Lake

Blue Lake

Blue Lake resides in Australia's winter wonderland, the Snowy Mountains. The lake was formed thousands of years ago when glaciers swept through the Great Dividing Range, carving the granite bedrock as it surged. Due to this unique formation of the lake, Blue Lake is one of only four cirque lakes found on the mainland of Australia, meaning the lakes are shaped like an amphitheatre in the foothills of a valley. The area, located to the west of Jindabyne, is a UNESCO biosphere reserve and has been listed as a Wetland of International Importance, under the Ramsar Convention of 1996. The site holds great biological significance due to the highly concentrated numbers of threatened flora and fauna living in the area, including the mountain pygmy possum and the broad-toothed mouse. For this reason, Blue Lake is used for environmental education with a focus on managing ecosystems and maintaining sustainable biological diversity. You can access Blue Lake from Charlotte's Pass at the west end of Kosciusko Road. The four hour return journey passes over the famous Snowy River, along the Main Range Track, and offers stunning glacial scenery. Camping is not permitted due to the conservation efforts.
