Wangaratta Heritage Trail

Step back in time and uncover the rich history of Wangaratta on this engaging self-guided heritage walk through the heart of the city's CBD. This walk invites visitors to explore a collection of beautifully preserved historic buildings, each telling a story of Wangaratta's growth from a frontier settlement to a thriving regional centre. Along the way you will discover architectural styles spanning different eras, reflecting the towns evolution and the people who shaped it. European settlement in the area began in 1838 at Ovens Crossing, following major Mitchell's favourable report which drew overlanders to the region. The heritage trail reveals the impact of major historical milestones, from the prosperity of the gold rush era to the arrival of the rail link connecting Melbourne and Sydney, an important development that cemented Wangaratta's role as a key regional hub. Suitable for all ages, this easy walking experience allows visitors to explore at their own pace, making it an ideal way to spend a relaxed morning or afternoon while gaining insight into the city's past. Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Holy Trinity Cathedral

Holy Trinity Cathedral stands as a significant landmark and central gathering place for the Wangaratta community. Completed in 1908, the cathedral welcomes visitors during daylight hours and invites all to attend services. One of its most remarkable features is its historic ring of eight bells, believed to be the oldest in Australia. Cast in 1806 following the Battle of Trafalgar, the bells bring a unique and enduring sense of history to the cathedral. Inside, visitors can admire the cathedral's beautiful stained-glass windows, which depict a combination of religious imagery and local community stories. A particularly notable feature is the stained-glass panel above the main entrance, which creatively illustrates the story of Wangaratta's development, from its early days as a farming settlement through to the growth of the town. Constructed in stages, much of the cathedral's striking granite was sourced locally from the nearby Warby Ranges, adding to its strong connection to the surrounding region. The cathedral grounds are also home to the Wangaratta Farmers Market, held on the second Saturday of each month. During market mornings, visitors can often enjoy performances by the resident organist, adding to the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

National Parks and Reserves

Merriwa Park

Merriwa Park is a picturesque riverside reserve and one of Wangaratta's most loved green spaces, featuring sweeping lawns and a majestic stand of River Red Gums. The name Merriwa is believed to be an Aboriginal term meaning rich flat ground at the bend of a river, reflecting the park's location within a natural floodplain. Many of the River Red Gums seen today were planted during the park's official opening in August 1905, although some pre-date this time and others have naturally regenerated over the years. Set alongside meandering lagoons that support diverse aquatic and birdlife, the park provides a peaceful setting for relaxation and outdoor recreation. Facilities include barbecues, picnic tables, playground equipment, lawn tennis courts and toilets, making it ideal for families and group gatherings. Over many years, the Wangaratta Urban Landcare Group has undertaken extensive bush regeneration works, enhancing the natural environment and creating a network of walking paths through the river red gum woodland and understorey vegetation. From Merriwa Park, visitors can easily walk through to neighbouring Kaluna Park for further nature exploration. Access is available via Ryley Street, and during the spring school holidays, the large pond behind the tennis courts is stocked with rainbow trout, offering a fun and accessible fishing experience for families.
