Three Mile Creek shared path

The Rural City of Wangaratta has a network of shared walking and cycling paths throughout the city. Three Mile Creek flows through the western part of Wangaratta. The path is 1.7 kilometres long and links to schools, child and aged care, golf courses and the Waldara area. Access the Three Mile Creek path via the One Mile Creek shared path or from the north end of Appin Street where the One Mile and Three Mile Creek tracks join. Either head over the bridge to the western bank at Edwards Street (which links via College Street to North Beaches) where you can head further afield to discover the Warby Ovens National Park or follow the track to Williams Road. The creek waters usually flow except in very dry summers. Nature reserves and revegetation work along the creek support many water and tree dwelling birds. Look out for frogs and reptiles and you may be lucky enough to spot a platypus.

Wangaratta Common Nature Conservation Reserve

This large relatively intact native grassland with diverse plants (96 species to date) is stunning in spring and early summer. It is home to a variety of native wildlife including a large mob of Kangaroos. A large woodland area in the northwest of the reserve includes a seasonal River Red Gum wetland and grassy Grey Box woodland in the higher parts and offers excellent bird watching at times. The grassland portion of the reserve is burnt every one to two years by Parks Victoria to maintain the grassland structure and diversity. This, along with much of the reserve becoming boggy during wet periods, means that it is best experienced during spring and dry winters. Bounded by Tone Road, Mason Street and Greta Road, the reserve can be accessed by walking tracks from the public roads mentioned above, as well as Hay Avenue and Connell Street.

Wangaratta Cemetery

Discover the rich history and intriguing stories of Wangaratta's past at the Wangaratta Cemetery, located on the corner of Tone Road and Mason Street. Officially opened in 1851, the cemetery provides a fascinating insight into the early settlement of the region and the lives of those who shaped it. Among its most moving features is the Vault of the Unknown Children, marked only by the inscription "Our Little Earnest and Poor Anthony." With no burial records available prior to 1862, the identity of these children remains a mystery, adding an element of quiet intrigue to the site. The cemetery is also the resting place of notable early settler George Faithfull, who established himself at Oxley Plains and named his homestead Wangaratta. A respected figure in the emerging township, Faithfull contributed to the development of the region before his death in 1855. Adding to the site's layered history are stories connected to the infamous bushranger, Mad Dog Morgan, whose death sparked controversy over the handling of his remains. Today, the cemetery offers visitors a reflective walking experience, blending local history, heritage and storytelling. National Parks and Reserves

Merriwa Park

Merriwa Park is a picturesque riverside reserve and one of Wangaratta's most loved green spaces, featuring sweeping lawns and a majestic stand of River Red Gums. The name Merriwa is believed to be an Aboriginal term meaning rich flat ground at the bend of a river, reflecting the park's location within a natural floodplain. Many of the River Red Gums seen today were planted during the park's official opening in August 1905, although some pre-date this time and others have naturally regenerated over the years. Set alongside meandering lagoons that support diverse aquatic and birdlife, the park provides a peaceful setting for relaxation and outdoor recreation. Facilities include barbecues, picnic tables, playground equipment, lawn tennis courts and toilets, making it ideal for families and group gatherings. Over many years, the Wangaratta Urban Landcare Group has undertaken extensive bush regeneration works, enhancing the natural environment and creating a network of walking paths through the river red gum woodland and understorey vegetation. From Merriwa Park, visitors can easily walk through to neighbouring Kaluna Park for further nature exploration. Access is available via Ryley Street, and during the spring school holidays, the large pond behind the tennis courts is stocked with rainbow trout, offering a fun and accessible fishing experience for families.

Holy Trinity Cathedral

Holy Trinity Cathedral stands as a significant landmark and central gathering place for the Wangaratta community. Completed in 1908, the cathedral welcomes visitors during daylight hours and invites all to attend services. One of its most remarkable features is its historic ring of eight bells, believed to be the oldest in Australia. Cast in 1806 following the Battle of Trafalgar, the bells bring a unique and enduring sense of history to the cathedral. Inside, visitors can admire the cathedral's beautiful stained-glass windows, which depict a combination of religious imagery and local community stories. A particularly notable feature is the stained-glass panel above the main entrance, which creatively illustrates the story of Wangaratta's development, from its early days as a farming settlement through to the growth of the town. Constructed in stages, much of the cathedral's striking granite was sourced locally from the nearby Warby Ranges, adding to its strong connection to the surrounding region. The cathedral grounds are also home to the Wangaratta Farmers Market, held on the second Saturday of each month. During market mornings, visitors can often enjoy performances by the resident organist, adding to the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
