High Country Rail Trail

Due to extensive fire damage in January 2026 the Old Tallangatta to Shelley Station section of the rail trail is closed. Stretching over 44 kilometres from Wodonga, through Tallangatta and out to Shelley, the High Country Rail Trail hugs the shoreline of the majestic Lake Hume. Ride back in time to the 1950s when the town of Tallangatta was relocated, and the old town flooded by Lake Hume. Cross the sparkling lake over the bright red 600 metre Sandy Creek Bridge to visit the new and old town sites. Pack your panniers with regional produce for a lakeside picnic at Ebden, Ludlow's or Huon Reserve, or take a refreshing dip while you simply soak up the sweet serenity.

Tallangatta to Old Tallangatta Stroll

The High Country Rail Trail runs 80 kilometres from Wodonga to Shelley. The heart of the trail is the section from Tallangatta to Old Tallangatta, which is six kilometres one way. Tallangatta is recognised by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) as one of two Notable Towns. In 1956 the town was relocated to higher ground to make way for the expansion of Lake Hume. What had been a typical late Victorian town was transformed into one with distinctive 1950s character. More than one hundred buildings were relocated, while others, including the civic and commercial buildings, were redesigned in the 1950s style of restrained modernism. Remnants of Old Tallangatta can still be seen when Lake Hume is low. Several buildings, including the historic butter factory and northern suburb homes, remained outside the flood zone. This section of the trail is accessible for wheelchairs, prams and bikes, making it suitable for everyone. Following the edge of Lake Hume, it meanders from Tallangatta to the Old Tallangatta Lookout where the original township once thrived. At the lookout, informative signs share photos and stories from the past. A picnic shelter and seating area make it a pleasant place to stop and enjoy a bite before the return walk. Pack a picnic and take your time.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Yackandandah Cemetery

With the discovery of gold in 1852 and the increase of population in the immediate vicinity of Yackandandah, a town cemetery would have soon been essential. A wander around the Yackandandah Cemetery evokes memories of a bygone era of hardship and gold mining. The first burial recorded was of 14 month old Ellen Anderson on 7 September 1859. The oldest remaining headstone belongs to James Stewart, a miner, buried 30 March 1860, aged 28. There is a Chinese Section with 26 known burials between 1860 and 1903, again a reminder of the thousands of Chinese miners that lived and worked on the gold diggings.
