Charlton Vintage

Charlton Vintage is in the small town of Charlton, Victoria - roughly halfway between Melbourne and Mildura on the Calder Highway. They use the word vintage loosely because their range of stock is eclectic. Some of their stock is quite modern but it fits thier ethos of reusing, repurposing, and blending old and new into an interesting whole. They love anything from the '60s and '70s. They sell women's and some men's clothing and jewellery and they have a large range of clip-on earrings. Their homewares include kitchen, pottery, and glass. They repair and restore small furniture – particularly tables and chairs. They also stock pictures, books, games, music and bric a brac. They began as a pop-up shop in July 2021 opening on Fridays and they've grown since then. They are also happy to open at other times outside their regular opening hours if you're passing through and would like to look through the shop. Please visit their Facebook page for opening hours on Public Holidays. They are located in High Street in a former bank – designed by architects Seabrook and Fildes, and of the Modern Functionalist style. It was built in 1938, the same year as the magnificent Rex Theatre a few doors further along in High Street.

St Arnaud Silo Art and Murals

The silos at St Arnaud were transformed under the skilled hands of Kyle Torney. Entitled ‘Hope’, Kyle’s masterpiece narrates the tale of three pioneer residents of St Arnaud. The mural is so large it spans two silos and illustrates St Arnaud's gold mining history. The design was chosen in collaboration with residents of the town. Kyle consulted with residents to select one of four design ideas to engage the local community. Demonstrating his meticulous approach to his craft, Kyle completed between 30 and 40 trips up and down the silo each day to ensure that the piece was proportionate and visually striking from a distance. The best way to see St Arnaud and experience its magic for yourself is to enjoy the trail of wall murals as well as the silo art that forms part of the Wimmera Mallee Silo Art Trail; Australia’s largest outdoor gallery. There are 20 locations of public art around town, all created by Kyle Torney, a talented local ‘narrative portraiture’ artist. His pieces feature images of people to amplify powerful, untold stories about those who have made St Arnaud what it is today.

Nulawil Art Silo

Landmarks and Buildings

Nulawil Silo Art

Sam Bates (SMUG) , a self-taught artist from Australia, is known for his photo-realistic murals worldwide. His skills evolved from early rebellious spray-painting and now grace buildings globally, including the Wirrabara silos. The artwork also paid homage to Nullawil’s history with a unique engraving on the dog’s registration tag, featuring a galah and stick. On the silo’s southern side, Smug’s signature is placed near local graffiti. Watching the project unfold as artist Sam Bates (Smug) transformed the silo was fascinating. Over the first two days, he covered the eastern face with brown, charcoal, grey, and flesh tones. The base coat was a house paint to seal the aged silo and prepare for the spray paints. Community members eagerly watched the artwork take shape, with the outline of a kelpie sheepdog and farmer slowly emerging. Sam faced weather challenges during the two-week process, with rain and cold winds making work difficult, especially while perched in a cherry picker. Known for his spray paint mastery, Sam also mixed his own paints and used a large sprayer to cover the vast silo surface. Gradually, the farmer’s checked flannelette shirt appeared, with detailed texture and folds, alongside the Kelpie dog, captured in stunning realism, right down to the shiny coat and detailed collar.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Welcome Stranger Monument

The Welcome Stranger Monument marks the site of one of the most extraordinary discoveries in global gold rush history, the finding of the largest alluvial gold nugget ever recorded. In February 1869, prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates uncovered the legendary Welcome Stranger at Moliagul, beneath the roots of a tree. Weighing more than 70 kilograms before processing, the nugget was so large it had to be broken apart before it could be weighed. The discovery captured international attention and cemented Moliagul's place in goldfields history. Erected in 1897, the granite obelisk stands near the original discovery site and serves as a lasting tribute to this remarkable moment. Surrounded by the quiet bushland of the Central Goldfields, the monument invites visitors to reflect on the scale of the find and the determination of those who searched for gold in Victoria's rugged landscapes. Interpretive signage helps bring the story to life, making the monument an engaging stop for history enthusiasts, families and travellers exploring the region's gold rush heritage. The site forms part of the broader Moliagul Historic Reserve and can be visited alongside walking tracks, picnic areas and nearby prospecting locations. A visit to the Welcome Stranger Monument offers a powerful connection to Victoria's gold rush legacy, where chance, perseverance and history combined to create a story known around the world.

Sheep Hills Silo Art

Throughout his career, Melbourne-based artist, Adnate has used his work to tell the stories of Indigenous people and their native lands, particularly the stories of Aboriginal Australians. In 2016, Adnate developed a friendship with the Barengi Gadjin Land Council in north-west Victoria and found his inspiration for this mural. GrainCorp's Sheep Hills silos were built in 1938. Adnate's depiction of Wotjobaluk Elder, Aunty Regina Hood, alongside two young children, celebrates the richness of the area's Indigenous culture. The night sky represents elements of local dreaming and the important exchange of wisdom, knowledge and customs from Elders to the next generation. Adnate says that he sought to shine a spotlight on the area's young Indigenous people and highlight the strong ancestral connection that they share with their Elders. Adnate had his start in graffiti and street art in Melbourne. Heavily influenced by the chiaroscuro (light and shade) style of Renaissance painters such as Caravaggio, his work embraces a realistic and sensitive approach to portraiture. Featuring a bold use of block colours via acrylic and spray paint, Adnate's portraits are known for introducing a strong energetic presence to their surroundings. Described as life-like and emotive his large-scale murals can be found in various settings throughout Australia and around the world.

Rupanyup silo art

Landmarks and Buildings

Rupanyup Silo Art

Rupanyup’s silo art is the work of Russian mural artist, Julia Volchkova, who turned her attention to the town’s youth and their great love of team sport. The work vividly captures the spirit of community and provides an accurate insight into rural youth culture. The featured faces are those of Rupanyup residents and local sporting team members, Ebony Baker and Jordan Weidemann. Fresh-faced and dressed in their sports attire (netball and Australian Rules football, respectively), Baker and Weidemann embody a youthful spirit of strength, hope and camaraderie. Rendered onto a squat pair of conjoined Australian Grain Export steel grain silos, the delicately nuanced monochromatic work is typical of Volchkova’s realist portraiture style. Accomplished over several weeks and unveiled in early 2017, the mural quietly honours the integral role that sport and community play in rural Australian populations. Artist Bio: Julia Volchkova was born in Nizhnevartovsk, Siberia (Russia) and studied classical painting there before moving to Saint Petersburg in 2010. Volchkova’s delicate portraiture seeks to explore the rich diversity present in the places that she visits. Volchkova uses art as a tool to deepen her knowledge of culture and place wherever she goes. Her frequent travels have resulted in numerous large-scale murals of local people in Indonesia, Malaysia and elsewhere around the world.
